lansdowne - april 2003
12.04.03
Matt and I hit up the Shady Grove ditch today after checking out the local record store. Someone was back there recently and cleared out a lot of the trees that overhung into the ditch. I assume this was either the Metro or the company on the other side. Even though it was cleared there still wasn't much more skateable terrain. The part that is skated seemed untouched. It was pretty cold out but we still got a good session in. I took some pics of the terrain which I hope to have up shortly. UPDATE 01.28.04 - pics of shady grove up here.

We've been having some pretty crappy weather lately. The ditch has been wet for some time with no signs of drying up. Matt and I decided to head up to Lansdowne today for some dry terrain. We made plans to meet Tim there and as usual Tim was very late. It looks like they are making progress on the parking lot behind the park, but still no "improvements". Maybe that's a good thing. This may be one of the last nice warm days of the year so I'm glad I got some skating in.
10.30.03
Matt and I checked out the ditch and it was soaked. We decided to hit up the Holy Roller banks. Matt had his camera with him so we took some pics, which I should have up here shortly.
10.23.03
Matt and I waited around for 2 hours for Tim and then gave up on him. We headed up to the ditch and left a note. We skated for about an hour and then headed back to the house, where Tim arrived shortly thereafter.
10.16.03
Matt and I hit up the ditch once again. We skated for a bit and as we were thinking about leaving some Greenbelt locals showed up. Its been quite awhile since we skated with anyone else there so we stuck around for a bit. They spent about 5 minutes giving us horrible directions to a new Greenbelt park, and then told us it sucked and wasn't worth going to.
10.09.03
Matt and I headed into DC this afternoon to hit up some fountains. I keep meaning to bring my camera and get some pics of the terrain but I forget every damn time. We met up with MDC there and skated for a bit with no problems. Apparently there was a gang war going on up the street which averted any police presence.

After running around DC for a bit we hit up the new park on Rhode Island. I got a look at this park earlier and wanted nothing to do with it but Matt insisted we check it out. The park consists of 2 quarterpipes, 2 bank ramps, a pyramid with a hubba, a very skinny spine, a fun box, and some rails. To top it off they are arranged horribly. I took some runs on everything but didn't do much. This is totally the kind of park you hurt yourself doing dumb stuff because there is nothing that you want to skate.

10.08.03
Matt and I hit up the ditch today to try out the new trannies. They are looking good and opened up some lines that I haven't done it quite awhile.
10.02.03
Matt and I headed up to the ditch today for a quick session and found that older Matt putting in some concrete on the busted trannies. I was hoping to do some work on this soon but Matt beat me to it. Hopefully I'll be able to put a coat of paint on to cover up the shitty graffiti. We ended up hitting a spot dubbed 'the holy roler' which contains two banks that meet at a right angle. There are a couple parking blocks there. But you can't really get a line going.
09.25.03
Steve and I headed up to the new Wally Holliday park in Sayreville, NJ. The park was packed when we got there. The park is pretty typical of a Holliday park. The bowl section went from about 3' to 8', with an "oververt" section. The oververt is so close to vert that it might as well just be vert because you can't feel it at all. The park has some decent lines, probably the best Holliday park I've skated so far.

We left Sayreville for Title 10 in Philly. Unfortunately, Title 10 seems to have modeled their sessions (and their prices) after Vans. Its about $13 bucks for only 2 hours. A pretty hefty price but the bowl is awesome. We got our 2 hours in during a decent sized session. A pretty nice day trip. Next time we will probably replace Sayreville with FDR, but Sayreville was worth hitting once.

Did a little fishin at the pond today. First time at the finished product.
09.18.03
Steve and I braved Hurricane Isobel to go to the ribbon cutting ceremony/session at the new Title 10 Skatepark in Philly. We drove up in some mild rains and winds and got there with no problems. We met up with Don there and checked out the park. The bowl is just plain sick. It was built by Tim over at Sk8ramp.com and he did a damn good job. We stood around for a little and then they brought everyone out of the park to cut the ribbon. After some brief thank yous and cheers the ribbon was cut and the snake session was on. This is one of the heaviest snake sessions I skated, 2nd only to the NYC Art Bowl final day. I got my fair share of runs in and found some nice lines in the bowl. I can't wait to back and skate when its not so insane. There are tons of lines in this bowl just waiting to be found. If you are in the area, do not pass it up. Check out the Title 10 and sk8ramp.com pages for pics of the bowl.
09.04.03
Matt and I hit up the ditch for a quick session. Even though fall is here it was still pretty damn hot.
09.02.03
I took some pics of some of the more recent art Tim has been working on and put it up in the art section. I also snagged a pic of Tim's Steve Bailey Consolidated deck drawn by Neil Blender. I put up some pics for the journal entries for the past week. If you look closely you'll notice that Matt is skating in his underwear in a few of them. I also added pages for Arbutus and Lansdowne.
08.29.03
Steve and I were at the beach and decided to hit up Exodus. When we got there we noticed that the shop looked pretty barren and knew something was amiss. It turns out that they are having landlord problems and need to move the shop and park. The guy behind the counter told us that the bowl is being moved and they intend to keep a small street section as well. They aren't sure where they will be moving it to, but would like to keep it in the area. The last day to skate is September 2nd. This news was pretty disheartening, but at least we were able to get a last session in. There wasn't too much time left before they closed for the evening but we got a pretty good session in. RIP, at least for now.
08.28.03
Matt, Tim, and I hit up the Arbutus Ditch and Lansdowne today. I got some pics of both spots so I could but them up on the Terrain page. Here's a couple pics of Matt from the sessions: Slobgrind at Arbutus##Handplant at Arbutus##Boneless at Lansdowne.
08.27.03
Matt and I hit the ditch for a short session today. I took some sequence pics of Matt. They came out a little dark and my camera isn't the best for sequences, but here they are:

Steve and I hit up Stafford this afternoon before work. I was hoping to take some good pics today but my camera's batteries died shortly after we got there. We had a pretty rad session and skated for about an hour before taking off for work. Steve has been learning crailslides, so hopefully I'll have a pic of one after the next Stafford session.
08.23.03
I set up a new deck yesterday, the Six Gun Adam's shovelhead. Today Thrashin' came on TV and my brother and I watched it. I think my new favorite scene is the air guitar solo performance. Afterwards we hit some thrift stores to look for some dagger clothing. My brother found a pre cut jeans jacket vest. I found a cowboy hat, and although that doesn't really have anything to do with the daggers, it looked pretty cool and was under a buck. After the thrift store we hit the ditch. The new deck is the smallest I've skated in a long time (just over 8"), but it felt pretty good. Here's a pic of my brother, Matt, and myself showing off our new wares.
08.21.03
I met Matt up at the ditch for a quick session as the sun went down. I skated to the ditch from my new house, and it was a pretty short commute. On my third run I disastered one of the rarely used parking blocks and put a large crack in my deck. I was able to skate with it for the remainder of the session though. We skated for about forty-five minutes before it was too dark to skate.
08.16.03
Matt and I headed up to the Riverdale Ditch to meet Tim and get a session in before Matt and Tim had to work. Matt and I got up there and skated for about 30 minutes before Tim showed up. As everyone knows, God hates Tim. Right as Tim arrived it began to sprinkle. Tim got 2 runs in, the second one ending with him falling because the walls were too wet. It started raining harder and we split before the downpour. I really wish I had brought my camera today, because Matt has been ripping it up lately. Also, my hip is very sore (and very black and blue) so I was trying to take it easy, having a camera with you gives you a break from hurting yourself more.
08.13.03
Aaron is moving to Colorado in a couple days and a session was called at Stafford to tell him 'good riddance'. I picked up Steve and Bobby after a couple hours of sleep and we headed down. This is the biggest session at Stafford that I've been to since the opening day session. It wasn't terribly hot today, but it was extremely humid but everyone was still skating pretty hard. I took a good fall on a frontside carvegrind and got a nice hipper. Joe from Boney Mug Skates took some vid and put it online: Aaron's Last Stand.

My plan for today was to head down to St. Mary's and possibly Stafford with Tim and Bobby. When I woke up Tim was no where to be found. Bobby arrived and he wanted to skate some ditches, so we decided to nix St. Mary's and check out some ditches. We started with the Riverdale Ditch. I took a good slam on a fsg (hangin up and slammin on a frontside grind!). We skated for a bit and then decided to head north to check out Pot Springs. This ditch was in pretty good condition but a good sweep. It looks like some of the locals are learning some concrete work with some role-ins, but still have a bit to learn. I'm pretty stoked to see some modification going on at this ditch. Hopefully the next time they are pouring they will fix up the huge crack in the bottom. After Pot Springs we headed over to Arbutus. I lost the directions to this ditch (but have since found them) so I was going on memory. I remembered the turns but couldn't figure out which exit it was. We searched around for a bit and then headed back. I was pretty bummed because I've only skated it once and I also wanted to get some pics of it. We got home at the beginning of rush hour, and beltway traffic being like it is we didn't want to sit that long to hit shady grove or germantown.

Hitting these ditches today made me realize that a Maryland ditch tour is very doable. My tentative plan would be to hit Pot Springs, Whitemarsh, Arbutus, Riverdale, Shady Grove, and Germantown, in that order. Matt and I have also heard something about a ditch in the Annapolis area but have not been able to confirm it, but if we could that would go in between Arbutus and Riverdale. It would seem that the best time to do this would be in the coming months, maybe for my birthday next month. Actually, that sounds like a kickass birthday.

Tim and I snuck in a quick ditch session before I had to go to work. It was a pretty fun session and I brought my camera to get a new overview shot. I took a couple shots of Tim and he took some of me. Tim's kickflip rock is a bail, but he made it a couple times today and I liked the pic.

Steve and I hit up Stafford before work today. It had been a bit since I've skated there so I was glad to get a session in. There were some little kids learning to skate the bowl when we got there - it almost seemed like summer camp. We got a pretty good session in before we had to split for work.
07.30.03-08.02.03
A lot of parks seem to be popping up in the Lake Michigan area and it was about time we checked them out. Steve and I headed out right after work on Wednesday and headed for the Novi Vans. This drive seemed surprisingly short and we hit Vans for the 4:45 session. This Vans has a rad bowl. It states it is 6' and 12' but I would guess more like 6' and 10'. It is shaped like chickens bowl however it has a longer and a bit steeper shallow and the hip is on the opposite side. The coping is the typical Vans coping but it was set a bit better than usual. The bowl itself is a lot less slippery than the average Vans bowl. The park also has a pretty interesting street course and a small outdoor course. We skated until the end of the session and then headed out to Mason.

We got a pretty good session in at Mason before it got too dark. This park is a bowled area with some street opsticles on the deck. There is also some walls with very small tranny, one with concrete coping, tile, and stairs. There is a tombstone wall and corner with tile and concrete coping in the bowled area. This a Team Pain park and it shows. There are some nice lines and no sketchy parts. We skated until dark and got a motel room. We came back the next day for a warmup session and to take some pics (they should be up on criticalthrash.com soon).

From Mason we headed to Lansing, another Team Pain park. This park was built much earlier than Mason and it shows. The park has an egg bowl and a street course with some corners. There is a vert wall in the street course with concrete coping but it is placed in a strange spot. It is relatively easy to hit with some speed but its placement makes it a prime spot for collisions. The park overall is pretty fun, not as good as the newer team pain parks but definitely worth hitting.

We headed out from Lansing towards Grand Rapids, and a new indoor park with a concrete bowl. The bowl was built by Team Pain and is sick. Nice clover-like shape with tile and concrete coping in the deepend. The rest of the park is pretty rad as well, with some sick wallrides. Nice miniramp and vert ramp as well. The bowl is really the highlight of the park though. It has a great finish on it so it is not slick like all the vans bowls. Its very fast and has tons of lines. The park has sessions, but we were lucky enough to arrive just as one started. We skated for the duration of the session (3 hours I believe). It was pretty empty but we were there during a weekday afternoon. After Grand Rapids we headed down to South Bend, IN. We arrived at the park at 5 of 9, 5 min before it was closing. We were pretty bummed until we remembered that Indiana is one of those weird states that doesn't follow daylight savings time, so it was actually 5 of 8. There was a pretty good local session going down. The locals were really nice, which made this the best session so far. The bowl is a weird shape, similar to Waldorf but not as deep and with a spine instead of a tongue. The bowl has some nice lines and seems to flow a lot better than the Waldorf park. Both bowls are designed by Wally Holiday. We skated the park until it closed and then headed for Chicago.

We arrived in Chicago pretty late and got a room. The next morning we hit the Burnham park for a warm up session. This park is pretty small. There is a right hand kidney that is about 3' and 5' and a strange bowled section. The park is extremely poorly build, with kinks and sidewalk style gaps all over. The kidney is still pretty fun and is worth hitting up if you are in Chicago. Its free, so it is a good warm up to the Wilson park.

After the warm up session at Burnham we headed down the shore to the new Wilson park. We didn't really know what to expect by this park since the pictures we saw online were pretty crappy. We were presently surprised with a large bowled area and a sick ameoba bowl with concrete coping. The bowled area was pretty rad, but the bowl was too good to bother with anything else. There were so many sick lines and the bonus pocket was awesome. The coping had a great grind and there was vert in the deepend (about 10'). We skated for a couple hours and then headed to Hot Doug's for some lunch. We got back to the park and skated another couple hours. This bowl is so sick. We skated until it started raining in the midafternoon and then headed to 4 Seasons in Milwaukee. We arrived in Milwaukee in the late afternoon and found 4 Seasons pretty easily. The bowl here is incredable. It seems I say this for every bowl on the trip but I really mean it this time. This bowl and the Wilson Park bowl in Chicago were by far the best 2 on the trip. This bowl is wooden with metal coping in the shallow and pool coping in the deepend. The bowl is very fast and is quite a piece of carpentry. Its a 3 sectioned bowl that is about 4', 5', and 8'. There are infinite lines in this bowl. This is the bowl that I can't stop thinking about.

We left Milwaukee around 10 and got back to Chicago in time to get some dinner. We then headed down to Champain, IL to get a room and then skate the local park. We got down to Champain very late and all the motels were full. It was pretty hard to believe but we couldn't find a room anywhere. We kept going farther and farther east until we just decided to drive home. We got home at about 6, making the trip about exactly 3.5 days. We hit 8 parks in 4 states. Pics of the parks should be up on Criticalthrash.com shortly.

07.25.03
Another quick dusk session at the ditch. This time just Anne and I. I skated solo for 20 min and called it quits. It was getting too dark anyhow.
07.24.03
There is a new park open in St. Mary's, MD. Steve and I headed down after work to check it out. The park is concrete with a street/bowled course and a clover with pool coping and tile. The bowled area has some vert in it and some decent lines but seems to be missing something. There is a lot of flat wall and I felt like I couldn't get speed going into certain parts. Its still fun and has some great lines though. It also has a interesting wall with quick tranny on one side. The clover is rad. I think it is about 4', 6', and 7'. There is no vert, but the hips are pretty burly. It's a fun park and I'm anxious to return.

After getting home Matt and I hit the ditch for a quick dusk session. Frontside grind anytime.

07.16.03-07.20.03
We've been meaning to hit up Florida for so long but always seem to push it off. Marc's brother-in-law ordered some racing kayak from South Africa and the importer is located in Boca Raton. It costed too much to ship so he paid Marc to go down and pick it up. Mikey, Steve, and I tagged along for the adventure. We left Wednesday morning with hopes to hit Kona that evening. After stopping at South of the Border and getting a little lost from poor directions we arrived in Kona just in time for the park to close. We stayed nearby and hit it up early the next morning.

We ended up getting to Kona around noon. It was incredably hot out but we were on a tight schedule so we couldn't wait for it to cool down. The old snakeruns here are fast and fun. Nice large banks on the turns and some huge roll-ins that we decided not to test out. There are some concrete bowls/pits that are pretty fun, one with a large vert tombstone. What I was most interested in was the kidney. After taking a run or two I was a little disappointed, however after a couple more runs I really started to feel the bowl and liked it a lot. The shallowend was pretty steep and fun to carve up. The deepend had a couple lumps but nothing too bad. The coping was concrete and felt a lot like the Ocean Bowl. Kona has a lot of new facilities, included a 13' vert ramp which we checked out. There was also an old concrete vert ramp which seems to be around more for the novelty. After a pretty long session we took off and headed for St. Augustine.

St. Augustine is a free concrete park that is pretty well layed out. The bowl is the same shape as the ocean bowl but is steeper in the shallowend and has a little more pronounced hip. Unfortunately, it had a couple inches of water in the bottom so we couldn't get many lines in it. We managed a couple carving around anyway. The street course is pretty fun with lots of bowled corners and speed humps. We didn't stay too long, mainly because of the water in the bowl and because we wanted to hit 1 more park before the day was through.

From St. Augustine we headed down to Orlando and hit the new Ovieda park. This is a Team Pain park and just opened up last week. There is a big street course, a sick bowled in section, and a killer bowl. The bowl is 4' and 8' right hand kidney with vert all around and a deathbox in the deepend. Nice pool coping and tile as well. The bowled section was pretty rad but we couldn't stay out of the bowl. We skated until the park closed (they don't have the lights working yet). I got wrecked trying to go over the deathbox b/s, but made it over f/s. Steve went over b/s and mikey went over both ways. Marc through down just about every trick in his book here, including my personal favorite - the texas plant.

After leaving Oviedo we headed down to Boca and spent the night. We got up early and picked up the kayak and then headed to the West Palm Beach YMCA. This park has 3 bowls, all with tile and concrete coping. It was insanly hot out but we skated regardless. All the bowls had pretty mellow tranny, especially after Oviedo. The coping was similar to the Ocean Bowl - painted concrete connected to the deck and set back too far (or grinded down too far). If it were cooler out I think these bowls would've been a bit more fun.

After leaving West Palm Beach we headed back up to Oviedo and skated another session. This bowl is just really one of the best bowls I've ever skated. I can't wait to go back. We skated till the park closed again and then headed up to charleston, SC. We arrived about 5 AM and crashed.

We got up around noon and got something to eat. We hung out for a bit waiting for the temperture to come down. It started to look like rain so we headed out to the Hanger in hopes to catch a quick session before the rain, but it started pouring before we got there. When we got there Hank and Crazy Joe were hanging out underneath the bowl and we went inside and waited for the storm to finish. After the rain stopped we got up on the deck and got our first real look at this monster. The deepend was huge. We tried drying the bowl up a little but the sun quickly fell behind the trees and we knew the bowl wouldn't be skatable today. We took off at dusk and drove back to Newport News, picked up the car and got back to DC around 8 AM.

07.12.03
Steve and I headed out to Aaron's birthday session at the ocean bowl and party down the street. There was a pretty good session today, a lot of locals and the Nagchaumpa crew showed up. I skated pretty well, a lot better than the last time I was here. Everytime I skate the ocean bowl it takes me a bit to remember where all the kinks are and adjust to them. We skated until dusk and then headed down the street to the party. The local beer store had Boh Ice, which is always a plus.
07.10.03
Matt and Tim drianed the frog pool today. Matt, Steve, and I skated it.
07.06.03
Hard to believe, but the Riverdale ditch is finally dry. Matt and I gave it a good sweeping and a brief session before I went to work. It felt good to skate her again but she needs some work on her trannies.
07.05.03
Steve and I had some plans for this weekend that fell through so we decided to take a day trip down to Wanchese. We hit a bit more traffic than expected but the session was worth the wait. Marc and I both dropped in the oververt, a first for both of us. I also b/s grinded the deathbox for the first time. I spent awhile trying to find a line to hit it and eventually gave up and just dropped in to it. There were quite a few people there today. Duck skates the Chief unbelievablyfast and has the hips wired. Near the end of the session I worked on some ollies over the deathbox. They were feeling much better today. Great session, great bowl, great people, great food... its almost enough to move down there. For those who haven't seen the bowl, here the deep and the shallow.
07.04.03
July 4th at FDR is not something to be missed. Steve, Jen, and I headed up and arrived in Philly around noon. There was already a raging session going on and some bands playing. We stuck primarly to the pool pocket, which had a lot of shreding going down. Too many locals were tearing it up way too hard. There seemed to be a lot more fireworks and a lot bigger fireworks this year. I skated FDR way better than I've skated it before and I can't wait to go back. Here are a couple pics from the day. Unfortunately I didn't bust out the camera until I was done skating and it was getting dark so they didn't come out as well as I would've hoped.

06.30.03
I woke up a little early today and headed down to Steve's. From there we headed down to Stafford for a short session before work. NoVA traffic made it even a shorter session. The more I skate this bowl, the more I like it.
06.28.03
I saw a local band called Griptape tonight. They are pretty good skate fueled thrash but hate municipal skateparks for some reason. Between sets I helped Anne and her friend Kara learn how to longboard. They want to learn how to surf so I figured this would be some good practice.
06.27.03
Late night longboarding. Tim and I headed up to UMD for some cruising. We skated some fun parking garages (and some not so fun ones) and some wide open parking lots.
06.26.03
Steve and I headed up to the Riverdale ditch after work for a nice cool early morning session only to find it soaked. We discussed some possible improvements and then headed home. After a good 6 hours of sleep Matt, Tim, and I headed over to the Shady Grove ditch. It was pretty hot out but the shade made a lot of difference. We skated for a bit until Tim bent most of his thumbnail back on a boneless. We decided to split and get some burritos.
06.18.03-06.22.03
Hellride 2003. Last year we hit Asbury, FDR, Pot Springs Ditch, Skatopia, and Riverdale. This year we headed out to Colorodo to skate the Vans bowl before its gone for good. Check out the article for some pics of the goings ons.
06.12.03
Steve and I headed down to Stafford after work for an AM session with some NC boys. Bitter Chris showed up as well and we had a pretty big session going on, especially considering it was before noon on a Thursday. I was a bit too tired to try anything new but my grinds were feeling great today. Duck and crew were tearing the place up. They brought a kid named Mikey along who was pulling some sick front side ollies all over the place. There was talk of heading out to skate the St. Mary's park (which has yet to open) but plans fell through so we hit up Waldorf with the NC crew. There is something about this park that I don't like, but I can't really put my finger on it. Its as if every pocket of the bowl is slightly off, so that you can never really find that great line, just a bunch of ok ones. The coping is also extra slick, which is even worse after skating Stafford. Regardless of its faults, its still a concrete roundwall park. We skated for a couple hours and then the rains came. Driving home was quite a task in the heavy rain, wind, hail, and NoVA traffic.
06.10.03
Matt, Tim, Matt's friend from OH, and I checked out the ditch today. Not surprisingly, it was quite soaked. We headed over to a small banked wall in Hollywood. Its a very strange spot - it has two banks that meet in an elbow and 2 parking blocks atop one of the banks. Its pretty fun but can get old pretty fast since you can pretty much only do one wall runs. We skated for about 30 min before heading out, and none too soon. We got yelled at by a security guard just as we were leaving.
06.05.03
Beach Party Attitude. Steve and I headed down to Wanchese to skate the Chief for the day. There was already a session going down when we arrived. This bowl is just so good. I can't get enough of it. I skated great again today. I got some nice fsg in the oververt and over the deathbox. I also managed to float some small ollies of the deathbox. As the sun started to go down some locals showed up and tore it up. I can't stop thinking about this bowl. Hopefully it won't be long till I return.
06.04.03
I headed down to Vans for the 7-9 session to meet up with Aaron and some other donkeys from criticalthrash.com There was a pretty nice sized session going down. I skated pretty well today and can't wait for the road trip tomorrow.
05.29.03-05.31.03
Bowl Bash 8. Steve and I left straight from work and made it out there in the early afternoon on Thursday. The new 'crete bowl was looking sweet. We lugged some stuff up to the campsite and got to work around the bowl. After setting up camp I had a nice session in the fullpipe and the punisher. After some heckling from Steve I finally dropped into the fullpipe. Its about 12' with 10' trannys and not flat. It took me a couple tries but I pulled it and got higher in the pipe than I ever had before.

On Friday I had a good session to start the day. I skated the punisher a bit and then hit the new pool. The pool was seeping some water up from the ground due to the intense rains this month so we had to clean it up every couple runs. This bowl is great. Steep trannys, vert, and great coping. People were tearing it up too. Sarge from New England was destroying it. Later in the day there was some nice rallying going on at the top of the hill. Psycho modified a car and then had a great demolition derby with camp keystone. After both cars were inoperable Psycho returned in the bulldozer and made short work of both of them.

Friday night brought the rain so saturday morning was pretty wet. We got a nice session going in the pool before a downpour brought us all inside to hit up the punisher. I had watched the Governor's lines the night before and managed to get some new ones for myself. I also dropped into the deepend finally, which was pretty easy after the fullpipe dropin. Some sick skating went down this evening which will most likely end up on some various webpages around the internet.

All in all I had a bitchin' time. I skated far better than I've ever skated anything at skatopia. The rallying and insanity seemed a little less than last year, probably due to the combination of the rain and the fact that I'd already witnessed last year so things weren't quite as shocking.

05.24.03
It has been raining far too much lately. Steve and I hit Exodus today for the first time in quite awhile. I seem to forget just how fun this bowl is when I don't skate it for a bit. We had a pretty fun session today. We both did a lot of grinding today. I worked on my tuck-knee frontside airs and they are feeling pretty good. I want to go skate more stuff.
05.21.03
Steve and I had a number of road trips that we wanted to take this weekend, but it appears that it is raining on the entire east coast. We settled on just heading down to Richmond to check out the indoor park, but the rain seemed to cause so much traffic that we just nixed the whole thing and stopped at waffle house. We hit Vans up afterwards for an afternoon session. I worked on my tuck-knee frontside airs and started getting some a little over the coping. Bulldog and Psycho showed up, along with decent amount of older guys and we had a pretty bitching session going on for the 7:00. We ended up skateing for about 3 hours (for only the price of 2 - it would be a good deal if the price wasn't already out of control).

I got soem pics from the Moffer from a couple weeks ago - one, two. I also lightened up one of the pics from yesterday.

05.20.03
Steve and I hit the stafford bowl today before work. I was a little worried that my new work schedule would not be condusive to skating before work, but it seems like it is working out better than before, although it is a little harder to hit Vans. I got my camera back today from Olympus, all fixed up and ready to go. We were both feeling pretty good today and had a great session. Steve was grinding the hell out of everything and I learned some tuck-knee frontside airs. I also got some nice grab carvegrinds, and Steve laid down some switch carvegrinds.
05.15.03
Rain, Rain, Rain.... I am not a fan of Spring. Steve, Matt, and I were able to get a session in at Stafford this afternoon. When we arrived there were already a session going on. Blaize and some friends were there and ripping it up. The bowl has been replied in some of the bad places and is nicer but a bit slippery. I think that will rectify itself after a season. The coping is still beat to hell but frontside grinds still feel great on it. Steve was grinding a lot today and pulled a sick switch carvegrind in one of the corners. Matt is really starting to figure out the corners and getting some speed out of b/s carves. Scott showed up late in the session. For a guy living in North Carolina I seem to run into him quite a bit. We skated for a couple hours until the rain started. It actually stopped fairly quickly but we decided to head out anyway.
05.07.03
Tim and I headed up to the ditch to meet Matt for a session. Tim and I had a pretty good session. I moved the parking block back on top of the extension. That thing really needs some decent coping. we skated for about an hour before Matt arrived, at which time Tim had to go to work. I was pretty beat but skated with Matt until the storm clouds rolled in and the rain began to fall. It's supposed to continue through the entire weekend.
05.03.03
Today was a beautiful day, and Matt, Tim, and I took advantage of it by hitting the ditch for a quick session. Someone had moved the extra parking block on top of the extension, which was not the best of ideas but was still fun. It took me a few tries but I was able to disaster it. Matt did some bonelesses to it which were pretty rad. It was nice to have a new obstacle, even if it wasn't the best placed block around. We had a pretty rad session and then headed over to the Fiesta for some burritos.
05.01.03
May Day! And what better way to celebrate May Day then by skating a bunch of ditches? Matt, Tim, and I headed up to Arbutus to search for the ever elusive Arbutus Ditch. We've been keeping an eye out for this place for a quite awhile. I got some sketchy directions recently so we went to try them out. After searching an industrial park for a bit we finally found the ditch. Its got some steep, high walls and a lot of cracks. There is a 15-20 foot section that is skatable, with another 6' that is pseudo-ridable. It has some parking blocks and some sketchy roll-ins. We had a lot of fun here. The highlight of the session (for me) was a tailstall on a door. After a hefty session we decided to hit the PS Ditch. This ditch seems to be pretty kept up, but still needed a good sweeping. We skated here for a bit. I like this ditch for 2 reasons - there is a wall to wallride and there is a strange stair to do tailstalls and ollie to axles. We skated until we were all pretty exhausted and headed back home for some burritos. After eating and some horseshit Matt and I swung by the Riverdale Ditch for an evening session. A different Matt was already there with a couple kids from his neighborhood. We had a pretty big session going and skated until the sun started to set.

Tim got off work at 1am and he, Matt, and I headed over to the Germantown Ditch for a late nighter. We were all pretty tired from the earlier sessions but still had a bit in us for this one. The ditch seemed darker this time, perhaps because of the lack of a moon. There is a new parking block there that is way to overwaxed. Its so waxed you can't even tell when you get your truck on there. We skated until 4am and then headed home. Tim forced me to finish giving him a mohawk (I had given him part of one before we left). I think it came out pretty good for a 4:30 am rushed haircut... Actually, I think it came out good for a wide awake midafternoon haircut.

04.30.03
Our last day on our old schedule and Steve and I made it out to Vans early to make sure we get the full session in. Brad showed up as well and we had a good miniramp session. I was really locking into b/s grinds today and they felt great. Steve seemed to be skating pretty good today as well. Brad and Steve both boardslid the handrail. Today was a lot of fun and one of the first time in a long time that the sessioned seemed way too short. They got some new dick working there who doesn't even let you get a run or two in after they say the sessions over. What a donkey...

Jay sent me a rad pic today from the 4.14.03 session. I'm pretty stoked on it.. he takes some rad pics!

04.29.03
This is our last week on our current schedule, so Steve and I hit Vans this morning and hope to tomorrow also. Our new schedule is not really condusive to skating Vans during any session (sessions suck by the way, but I'm sure if you probably already figured that out). We had an ok session, skating some bowl and miniramp and trying to hit a plethora of stuff since we won't be here as much. There were no kids here today, just 3 other skaters who were older. The session started out a little wonky, but soon it was feeling pretty good.
04.25.03
Steve and I headed out to the Ocean Bowl this morning. It was overcast out and the dreary weather seemed to affect our skating. Both of us were off today and just couldn't get into it. Steve took some pics which I'm interested to see how they turn out. He took some with my camera until my board shot out and smacked it, taking it out of commission. A broken camera is a great way to top off an already shitty session. This pretty much killed any excitement that was left and we headed home earlier than planned.
04.24.03
Riverdale is finally dry! Tim and I swung by and were pleasantly surprised. We cleaned it up a bit and then got our thrash on. We were definitely out of practice with this ditch but we both skated pretty well. It has some problems on the transitions that definitely need to be addressed this summer.

I metroed down to DC to meet the Moffer at work and then head over to the fountains. We called up our old friend Mike who met us there. We got in a nice long couple hour session without being kicked out. Mike was rocking an old McGill with soft wheels and he was really carving up some of the tighter fountains. I'm really starting to get up on my f/s slashers and getting some nice grinds. This is the longest I've ever skated here and definitely the hardest. After a heated session we swung by Asylum for a drink and ended up staying way to long and missing the metro. Good times....

04.23.03
I wasn't going to go to Vans today but Steve reminded me that our schedules will be changing soon so this will be one of the last chances we have to go. We had a pretty standard session today, although there were still too many kids there. They seemed to stay out our way for the most part, though. Avoiding the miniramp until we go skate something else, which is pretty nice.
04.16.03
Steve and I hit Vans this morning and met up with Brad there. Its still spring break for some schools so there were quite a bit of kids there. I warmed up in the bowl and then headed over to the miniramp for a bit. Brad was totally ripping it up. I was skating pretty well today. I started trying some nosestalls and totally ate it. After that I tried dropping in switch but kept wussing out. I dropped in on some of the small quarter pipes in the park but couldn't get up the nerve to do it on the mini, perhaps due to the fall earlier. After putting off the switch dropin until another day I cruised the concrete section for a bit and did some child slalom and had a few close calls. I ended the session with some good runs in the bowl.

After work Tim, Matt, and I headed over the Germantown Ditch. Matt and I had been here years ago when we were still in school. All I remembered was that it had some big cracks and I ate it pretty hard. Matt had recently located it again and took us over. This ditch is pretty rad. Its got some nice hips and is about twice as long as riverdale. Matt was tearing this place up last night. He was landing everything and skating hard. He pulled some sick bonelesses over the hip. Tim was ripping pretty hard as well, pulling frontside rocks on the only parking block there. I was skating OK, but just couldn't seem to keep my feet right on the deck. Every trick felt like I was sketchy. I was able to pull some small ollies over the hip and get some ok fs grinds on the parking block. We skated for about 1.5-2 hours without any hassle, except for the periodic drizzle. Here's a couple pics I took on the way there (number 2 by Tim) - #1#2#3#4#

04.14.03
Steve, Jay, and I hit of Vans this morning. I was feeling a bit off today. I was still able to land some most of my tricks but none of them felt smooth. I'm sure everyone has days like this. Even though I wasn't feeling 'on' today it was still a nice session. I haven't skated with Jay in a bit so it was good to see him. Near the end of the session we ended up in the bowl. Steve got me trying some layback slides under the coping. I'm still learning how to get my body in the right position but I got a couple of OK ones. Jay took a couple
pics today, mostly of me grinding the deepend but a few others. I'm excited to see how they come out. Jay told me he is getting some pics in Juice, so that is pretty rad. Check out his stuff at jaywestcott.com, and while you are at it, check out Rob's new site at eastcoastaholic.com. Rob intends to post the dirtboarding pic of me that he took at last years Bowl Bash at Skatopia. I'm still waiting to see it.
04.10.03
It was supposed to rain all weekend but ended up being pretty nice today. Matt and I took advantage of the dry day and drove down to the Stafford Bowl for an afternoon session. When we arrived there was some 'do not enter' tape wrapped around some trees, but not blocking our entrance. We walked up to the bowl and the gate was open so we started skating. Some local kids came up for a little but quickly left. After about 20 min a park employee comes up and flips out that we are in there. She cites the red tape which is on a couple trees. Apparently we are supposed to know that that means 'do not enter', even if we aren't going near the trees. I guess they are replying the bowl and even though the bowl is perfectly skatable they have it closed until it is finished. At any rate, we weren't allowed to skate at the skatepark, so we headed up to DC to hit some fountains. When we arrived at the fountains there were some kids crawling around in some of the higher ones and some tourists looking around. We started skating and the kids immediately came over. We figured we only get about 10-15 min in but we ended up skating for about an hour and then leaving without incident. I'm really getting the feel for these fountains. I was able to get some nice long b/s 50-50s and some f/s tailstalls. Matt got up on a couple f/s grinds as well as doing some rad tricks that I don't know the name of (if they even have names). All in all it was a rad day for skating. We got kicked out of a skatepark and skated an illegal spot for as long as we wanted...
04.09.03
Steve and I hit up Vans this morning. We seem to get back into the groove of skating Vans in morning. We had a pretty good session today, we stuck mainly to the miniramp. Tried some b/s disasters for a bit but just don't have the feel yet. Vans is nice but it is too damn expensive. We had an ECRW corporate list going but its now expired and we are paying way too much...
04.04.03
I woke Matt up early today and we headed back over to the fountains to get a quick day session in. They were a lot easier to skate in the day. I was able to really get ontop of the coping today and felt much more comfortable. I got some nice b/s 50-50s and some slashers. Matt was pulling his usual barrage of tricks. I was quite impressed that he could do a lot of them on the tight tranny. These fountains are really fun.. I definitely want to hit them up again.
04.03.03
Tim, Matt, and I headed up to Lansdowne. We had heard that no one is there to enforce pad rules on off hours (when school is in). We arrived and there were some construction crews working on some surrounding area (street course perhaps?) but no one seemed to care about us. We had the whole park to ourselves. It has been over a year since any of us have been up there and we definitely missed it. I brought my camera up and was happy to be able to play around with my new fisheye and really get a feel for it. One of my favorite things to do at Lansdowne is ollie the hip over the anarchy tag. These felt great even though I haven't done them in quite awhile. I also love doing berts on pretty much everything there. Tim pulled some sick bonelesses and ollies on the same bank. Matt threw down some berts as well. We moved over to the flat area near the smurf and tim pulled some sick b/s ollies, matt pulled a f/s tailblock and I did a carve like Don.

On the way home we spotted an empty fountain. It was about 1' deep but looked fun. We stopped and walked over and say another 3' fountain with tile, but no lip. We skated both for about 5 min. We saw people coming to kick us out so we split. A great winddown session after a pretty kickass afternoon.

I think skating the fountains this afternoon gave me a craving. Matt picked me up around midnight and we headed down to DC to skate some fountains. They were about 3' deep with some steep transitions and a grindable lip. Matt has been here a couple times but I had never been. I took a couple warm up runs to get a feel for the tranny but Matt just threw his back truck on the lip on his first run. After get used to the tranny I was able to get some b/s 50-50s and some f/s slashers. We skated for about 20 min and I ended the night with a f/s disaster.

04.02.03
Steve and I hit Vans today and met up with Brad - one of the guys who used to work in our office. I had never skated with Brad but had heard he was pretty good. We spent the majority of the time on the 4'. Brad had taken some time off from skating and was still getting his tricks back. He was pulling some sick noseblunts. I haven't been to Vans, or even on a miniramp, in weeks but everything was feeling pretty good today. I got fakie rocks back immediately and pulled some disasters and tailstalls. I worked on some new tricks including fakie to smith stalls and standup f/s grinds. I skated the bowl a bit but was pretty tired. I locked up on a f/s grind in the shallow and took a pretty nasty fall. It was a pretty rad session overall, everything was feeling good.
03.22.03
The ditch is still pretty soaked. I checked it out this morning hoping that the top part would be skatable or at least have some dry parts but it looked to be under a bit of water. It was a beautiful day out so Matt, Tim, and I decided to hit campus. We headed over to the Van Munching building where they have a nice raised brick square that is great for manuals only to find that it had been removed. From there we headed over to the sundial and skated the ledges for a bit. We headed up to the area in front of Hornbake only to find construction fences blocking off most of the better stuff. We played around for a curb for a bit and decided to head out. We headed over to one of the loading docks behind Greenbelt Mall. There was a car parked in front of part of it but we got to fool around on the banks a bit. Tim was trying this badass handplant but couldn't quite land it. After Tim cut his hand on some glass we decided to call it a day and head home.
03.15.03
I finally made it to the Waldorf Park. Aaron and I headed down early and made it there shortly after 10. Its 6 bucks for 4 hours, which is a good deal when compared to Vans. A couple of the local CT boys showed up and we had a pretty good session. There are a lot of lines in the bowl and it goes from 4' to 8' (no vert). There is a nice tight pocket which the locals dubbed the 'betty ford pocket' because no matter how messed up you go in you always come out nice with a lot of speed. This is a pretty fun park but it seems like it can get a bit boring after awhile. We skated until the first session ended at 2 and then headed home. I took a couple pics with my new fisheye - here's one of Aaron frontside grinding the deepend corner. I tried to get a good panoramic view but it didn't come out that great, but it gives you a good idea of what the bowled area is like.
03.13.03-03.14.03
The ditch looks like it won't be dry very soon. We drove by thursday and it was soaked. We drove around a bit but all our normal spots were unskatable. Tim and I ended up making some very sketchy setups in our driveway and skating them. On Friday Tim and I headed back over to the ditch with a broom and cleaned it up a little, but there is just too much water. Hopefully part of it will be skatable next weekend.
03.07.03
Steve and I headed down to Vans today to meet up with some of the CT boys. Everyone flaked but Packy, who was tearing up the bowl. Its been over half a month since my last session, but everything was feeling great today. I recently got some Swiss Ceramic bearings and I could definitely feel the difference. They are very fast. I spent some time and the kiddie pool today. I was practicing some lip tricks and carving fakie, which is much harder than people make it look. Overall, it was a pretty great session. I hadn't skated if far too long so I was really itching to get on my board.
03.05.03
Too much snow has fallen. I haven't been able to skate for almost half a month. Part of this is due to my own laziness of not getting up early and hitting Vans. Anywho, Jay sent me a pic at me at Vans a couple sessions back. I also got a fisheye lens, which would explain the new journal pic.
02.14.03
Steve and I headed up to NYC to skate an art exhibit bowl in SOHO. Check out some pics on Skatespots.com (about halfway down on the right). It was the last day of the exhibit so we knew it would be a full on snakesession. We got there and confirmed our suspicians. It was hard to get a run in but we managed to get some. Steve got in more than me. The bowl itself is a very sick design. Its 7' deepend and 3-4' shallow. The shallowend is pretty steep so it keeps you in and the deepend goes to vert or near vert. Pool coping all around. The pool coping is very nice! It grinds like butter. We skated until the gallery closed at 6pm. We saw some sick skating go down. We were both feeling pretty hurt by the end. Both of us had some collisions and I fell pretty hard on my knees (padless). I'm uncertain where the bowl is headed off to next but I hope it stays on the East Coast because I would love to skate it again.
02.13.03
Having snow all over makes people bored and stupid.
02.11.03
Steve and I headed down to Vans again today. I was anxious to take some of the tricks I learned yesterday and try them on the 6'. After a warmup run in the bowl we headed over to the 4' and took a couple runs. I was feeling good and was able to tailslide and rock-to-fakie right away. We soon headed over to the 6' and I worked on pumping back and forth until I got the rock-to-fakie. It didn't feel as comfortable as on the 4' but I got a couple. After a couple sessions I think these will become more regular feeling. After that Steve and I spent a good bit of time trying to f/s disaster the 6'. After numerous tries I landed one, and then after about as many tries I landed another. Steve got very close, about as close as you can get without landing one. He will definitely be pulling them soon. I ended the session on a mellow note; cruising the street course and then taking some runs in the bowl. I thought about trying some disasters in the lowend but decided that will wait for another session. I feel like I've really progressed on the miniramps in the last two sessions. I think I can begin to take this over to bowls - especially stafford. I can't wait to hit that again. Its probably got 7" of snow in the bottom of it. On a side note, I'm an ebay model now... check out Matt's auction for a Skate Core hat.
02.10.03
Steve and I drove down to Vans through some light snow this morning. They were calling for 1-3" but we didn't even get 1. We met Jay down there. We warmed up a bit in the pool and concrete course but ended up over on the vert ramp. I was trying some airs and got some good ones. I couldn't get any tuckknee airs though. Regardless, they felt pretty good and I tried some b/s airs too. Jay is really getting up on the vert ramp and so close to grinding. A couple times his wheel would ride on the coping, and he may have got some grinds in on the other side. After the vert session we headed over to the 4'. I haven't skated mini in a bit and brushed up on some tricks. I soon felt pretty comfortable and started trying some new tricks, namely rock to fakies and f/s tailslides. The rock to fakies felt pretty weird at first but I started getting more comfortable with them. The tailslides took me a bit but I eventually started landing some. Jay was learning f/s turns and grinds. He was a little sketchy at first but started looking smooth really fast. We ended the session in the bowl and Jay got some nice f/s carves in the shallowend. This was a great session. I feel like I really progressed. Learning the rock-to-fakies definitely opens up a lot of lines and possibilities for tricks on the mini. Jay said the same thing about going frontside. He seemed as excited as I was after the session.
02.09.03
Updated the pic page with some new (and some old) pics, all of which have appeared in my journal at some point.
02.06.03
Today was a good day - skating, record stores, and burritos. Matt and I hit the ditch around 11 today. It was pretty cold out but not too bad. It was much more muddy than yesterday and we both soon had pretty muddy griptape. This made the grip rather slick and it was getting increasingly harder to stay on the board. After a good 45 min session we headed for some record stores. RTX in Fairfax and then Joe's in Rockville. On our way to Joe's we stopped in Shady Grove to hit the Rockville ditch. This was less muddy than Riverdale but had a ton of pine needles. After sweeping it out a bit we had a pretty good session. I got some nice long f/s grinds on the pvc coping. Matt did something pretty rad on the parking block but at this point I can't remember what it was. I remember being quite impressed though. (maybe he'll email me and fill me in, but more likely he'll have no idea what I'm talking about). After Shady Grove we headed over to Joe's and then to California Tortilla for some burritos. It looks like we got some skating in just in time - it started snowing soon after we got back so we won't have much outdoor skating for a bit.
02.05.03
Today was bright and sunny out when I awoke, so I had a good feeling about the ditch. I drove over there and quickly realized that bright and sunny are not synonymous with warm. Regardless, the ditch was dry, at least the top half. I gave it a good sweeping and then started taking some runs. The transistions were bad before but are really breaking up. I had a pretty good session though, it was nice to skate it again. I tried some b/s disasters for a bit and was able to land a couple, although they didn't look pretty! After a good 45 min solo session I headed home. Its supposed to snow this weekend so I may only get one more session in before it becomes unskatable again.
02.04.03
I woke up at 9am today for some unknown reason. I tried going back to sleep but it just wasn't happening. I lied there think of skating so I got up and headed down to Vans. When I got there I had the park all to myself. I skated the bowl for a bit and then headed over to the vert ramp. I wanted to learn three things: b/s kickturn nosegrabs, tuck knee frontside airs, and inverts. I wasn't too optimistic on the latter but figured I'd work on them a bit. The b/s kickturn nosegrabs were incredably easy and I started getting pivoting on the coping and got some small grinds. The tuckknees were a bit harder but after a few bails I landed a couple, albeit sketchy. I worked on them for a bit and started feeling pretty comfortable. They weren't as high as my 'stinkbug' airs but I like them better. I think with some work they'll be just as high. Next I started inverts. Someone once showed me how to learn inverts, just start low and gradually work your way up the transition. I started trying them about halfway up and was able to land most of them. I worked my way up but did not get too much higher before taking a pretty hard fall. After that I decided to give the inverts a rest and try the tuckknees in the bowl. After a few bails I managed to pull some really sketchy ones under the coping. I kept trying and got more comfortable and was able to get them a bit higher, but still not as high as the stinkbugs. I had a pretty good session today. It was nice to have the place to myself for most of the session.
02.02.03
Although I've been back from Scotland for a couple days, I think I'm still feeling some effects of the jet lag. I've been getting up pretty early everyday, so I decided to make use of it today and hit Vans before work. I set up my Wolfpack deck (8.5) and was anxious to try it out. The skinnier deck felt good. I think I'll stick with them for a bit. After a couple runs in the bowl a Vans employee came over to mop it (you'd think they'd do this before the session but that would imply that they aren't retarded). I skated the concrete course for a bit but its just too small. I ended up over on the 6'. There was someone skating the vert ramp and pulling some sick airs. After some runs on the 6' I decided to take some runs on the vert ramp myself. I've been thinking about trying some real airs (as opposed to early grabs) so I figured I'd give it a shot today. After a few warm up runs I tried a couple and I managed to pull some. They weren't very high but at least I'm getting above the coping now. I plan to try these again next time I go (I know Steve will be happy to skate vert with someone). After the bowl dried I headed back over and tried some airs in deepend. It felt pretty sketchy. I think I have to get more comfortable on the vert ramp first. There was a decent number of people there and there was a nice session going. I was skating pretty good and tried some new things. I tried some earlygrabs on the flat wall which felt great. I also rolled in to a different spot which gives you lots of speed for airs. Sunday morning sessions are pretty fun. Hopefully I'll hit them more often.

Made some updates today. I put up pics of Livingston, Scotland as well as a pic that Jay took or me crailgrinding the deepend at Vans. I also started to put captions and photo credits on pics. They're pretty tame now, but hopefully I'll get a bit more creative.

01.22.03-1.29.03
Scotland. I traveled with a couple friends to Scotland and was lucky enough to get some skating in. On the 23th Matt and I took the bus to Livingston to skate the concrete park. The park was built in the 70s and had some coping added in the 90s. It has a nice bowl but unfortunately it had a couple feet of water in it. The rest of park has some nice lines but there was a few muddy areas to watch out for. It also has some vert on it, which is something that lansdowne is seriously lacking. There were some locals there ripping it up. I was able to pick up some lines off them, but they were doing some sick transfers that I couldn't make. Matt and I spent the majority of the time in the 6' area. Matt pulled some sick bonelesses and handplants. I had fun cruising around the park and was able to pull most of my miniramp tricks in the 6' area. I managed to throw down a few crail grinds. All in all the park is very fun, but would've been a hell of a lot better had the bowl been empty and the mud cleared out. I'll have to try to go back in the summer sometime.

We didn't get too much skating in aside from the Livingston park. The next closest concrete park (that we knew of) was Perth, which is a ways north. On the last day we had some time to kill before taking the bus to the airport and found some nice steep banks in Edinburgh. We skated them for a bit before getting kicked out and heading over to the visitors center (which had been skate stopped) and skating some flat ground and benches.

01.19.03
I ended up falling asleep pretty early last night and I woke up at 8:30am this morning. I figured since I was up so early I might as well hit Vans before work. Sunday morning is a standard older guy session so I knew there would be some other people skating the bowl. There was a pretty good session going today. My airs were feeling pretty good as were my f/s grinds. I've had a lot of things on my mind the past couple days so it was good clear my mind with some grinds.
01.17.03
Steve had mentioned trying to hit the new Waldorf park today but when I woke up the ground was covered in snow. I was still itching to skate so I called up Steve and we headed down to Vans for the 2:30 session. The session was moderately crowded however no one was skating the bowl. We had a pretty good session today. Steve, as usual, was pushing me to try some new things, which usually results in some pain and progression. Today was no exception. I worked on my crail grinds and tried to get a bit more on top of the coping so that I might pull it into a crail slide eventually. Steve took some pics today but I'm not sure when he'll get them developed. He still has a number of exposures left so it may be a bit before I see them.
01.15.03
Steve and I headed down to Vans this morning before work. Jay showed up too so we had a pretty good session going. I haven't skated with Jay for quite awhile but he looks like he's been skating a bit in that time. He definitely looks a lot smoother. I tried some crail grinds today and they felt pretty good in the shallowend but a little sketchy in the deepend. This is the first time I've skated Vans with Jay since they lifted their camera regulations so Jay pulled his camera out near the end of the session and took some pics of me and Steve. I'm really looking forward to see how they turn out. Check out some of his work at jaywestcott.com.

Matt and I hit Stafford today. It was a bit colder than yesterday but still pretty warm for January. We arrived to find the gate to the bowl open, something which actually surprised me. Whats more surprising was that the bowl was dry and pretty clean. I guess yesterdays warmth dried it up and brought out some skaters. After warming up I started trying some new lines. I pulled some nice f/s airs on the extension. They were feeling really good and I had a nice speed line to it. I tried some stand-up b/s 50-50s today but couldn't quite stay on the coping. I kept leaning back too far, but I still managed to pull a couple okay ones. I tried a couple crailslides today but can't seem to get on top of the coping. I was able to pull some nice crail grinds though. I think I'm going to try to work them into more lines and try them on some bigger things. I also pulled some nice f/s grinds while grabbing my nose. I guess I was ready to try new things today. Matt was learning a bit too. He's working on f/s carves and was trying to grab through the corners. He didn't quite get it, but he's getting much better each time we go. He also tried some 50-50 stalls. A couple more Stafford sessions and he should be tearing it up.

Its been quite awhile since I went street skating. The ditch is still soaked and not showing any signs of drying up. Matt, Tim, and I were getting hungry so we decided to hit the Maryland Co-op and skate around campus a bit. We started out at the sundial. I was able to get manuals, noseslides, and small 50-50s back pretty quickly. The noseslides were feeling great and I was sliding a couple of feet. The manuals were feeling great but I wasn't able to hold them very long. I surprised myself with the 50-50s. I was never that great at them before but they were feeling pretty natural today. I wasn't really trying them on anything too high, but I still felt good about them. Matt is skating a Jay Adams Deathbox board, which has about as much concave as any early 80's pig. I can't imagine that it would be good for street but he said it wasn't too bad. From the sundial we headed over to hornbake and skated some more ledges. Tim ollied some stairs and Matt boneless'd them. I haven't tried any stairs in over a year and I wasn't feeling ready to try today. I was pretty surprised by how much fun I had. I think I may be cheating myself by sticking to bowls and ditches. I guess my resolution for this year is to skate a little more street.

At around 2:30am Tim and I headed up to the safeway parking lot to do some longboarding. We cruised around for about a half hour and then headed home. Right before we left Tim found a CVS photo envelope but there were no photos inside. Tim chucked it but I grabbed the negatives telling Tim "You know there's some naked chicks on here!" Sure enough, I was right. The strangest part is that almost every frame is double exposed.

The first session of the year was spent at Vans. Its been raining and snowing a lot recently so most outdoor spots are unskatable. The ditch has been wet for quite awhile and there are no signs that it will be dry anytime soon. I got some skate videos in the mail today and after watch a couple hours or skating I couldn't take it any longer. I called up Steve and we hit Vans for the 9-11 session. Its been awhile since I went to a Friday or Saturday night session. I saw some familiar faces and met some new people. The session was pretty good. I had been pretty sick last week and I'm still not fully recovered so I was very tired. I still got a lot of runs in and tried some new stuff. Steve urged me to f/s cess slide over the hip while grabbing the coping, and after a couple tries I was able to pull some. I also tried some f/s slashers in the shallowend pocket, but was too tired to get a good one. Its a pretty good line and I'm looking forward to experimenting with it later. It sends me into the deepend b/s and then right at the hip. Vans has lifted the Camera rule (which never really made sense to me anyway) so Steve brought his camera in and took some pics. Hopefully he'll get them developed soon, but I think he still has a lot of pics left to shoot on that roll.
