Last day of the year... I put up some pics of the Wanchese. See the 12.06.02 entry. I'll end this with a pic of me in SF.

Steve and I head down to Vans for a Wednesday monring session. Its been quite awhile since we made it down to Vans. I had heard they replaced the coping on the pool and was anxious to try it out. The coping sticks out a bit more than before (because it was so ground down). I heard some people were upset with it, but I like it. Sure
it could've been better, but it could've also been a lot worse. The real problem with the bowl is that it is so slick. They've sandblasted some of the Californian bowls and it makes a huge difference. I really doubt they'll ever care enough to actually sandblast the bowl here. Anywho, the session was pretty nice. I got some nice f/s
carvegrinds in the shallow and deep ends. I ended the session with a nice f/s double carve in the deepend and grinded both walls.

12.16.02
It was much colder tonight than last night. I convinced Matt to come up to the safeway parking lot and cruise around a bit. There are some nice painted curbs so he sessioned them for a bit while I cruised around on the Dead Guys longboard. It was too cold to stay out for very long, so we only lasted about a half an hour.
|
12.15.02
The snow has finally (almost) melted away. The streets are dry again and the weather is a bit warmer. Over the snow break I ordered some Randal trucks and Bones Bombers wheels and finally set up my Skull Skates Dead Guys 2 deck. Its been too wet to try it out for awhile but today it was finally dry enough. I got home from work
at 12:30am and Tim was still up. We took our longboards (Tim has a TVS) up to the safeway parking lot and cruzed around. The randal trucks are incredible. We cruzed around for a bit and had a lot of fun. We found a strange roll-in to one of the parking lots. It was about 20' long and 10' high. It is paved for drainage purposes but made an
excellent roll-in. We skated around for about an hour before heading back home.

It snowed 6" yesterday. The roads were clear today though. I left my house at 7:15am to meet Steve around 8am and head down to Wanchese, NC. As we drove south the scenery changed from snow laden fields to ice covered trees. As we neared the shore the snow and ice disappeared and the tempeture rose. It was mid 40s in Wanchese. We arrived around 1pm and
started the session. It was pretty cold to start but we soon warmed up a bit. I found a nice line to hit the oververt f/s and soon I was getting tile. I got some f/s grinds on the 9.5' round bowl and got my first taste of the coping. Its handpoured coping and grinds great. The oververt section has diamond pool coping (ECRW special!), which I soon found out
grinds quite nicely. Steve threw some b/s grinds over the deathbox. Very sick. Some locals showed up shortly and started ripping. Andy was grinding everything and Rob was showing his usual style. I landed some nice airs in various sections of the bowl. Steve threw up some nice ones in the round section but couldn't bring them back in. He managed to land one
after a bit but it wasn't as high as some of the ones he wrecked on. I found a line to hit the deathbox f/s. The first couple tries I didn't have the speed to grind and just floated over it. I'm not really sure how thats possible, but I rode away (photographic evidence shows that I was riding on the coping). After a couple tries I was able to throw up the
grind. I got my first oververt grind and my first deathbox grind today.
I skated pretty well, I think I might've skated a little better if it wasn't so cold. We left as the sun went down and made it home around 11pm. I don't know why everyone thinks the day trip to Wanchese is so crazy. The day trip to Skater Island - that's crazy. Couple more pics - one, two, three, four - all pics by Steve (criticalthrash.com).

12.01.02
It was cold today. Aaron, Steve, and I headed to some pools that we got a tip on. We met Big Brian up there and checked out the situation. we heard they were skatable but the source seems a little unreliable. There were 2 pools, a left hand kidney and a square. The kidney was kinked and had very little transition. The square one had some
very nice tranny but had a lot more water in it. Both needed bailing
and cleaning and we did not have much daylight. There were no wheel marks so it appears that these are virgin pools. Maybe we'll be back.

11.29.02
Charlie was back in town for a couple days so we met with him at the ditch for a session. It was pretty cold out but not too bad. The lower side of the ditch still has standing water, so we could only skate the upperside. I set my libtech back up and skated it today. It is definitely a lot slicker than the Black Label w/rails I've been using
at the ditch. Its also quite a bit wider (9.25 instead of 8.5). We skated for a good hour or two before calling it quits. The slicker deck definitely helped my tailslides.
|
11.27.02
Matt stayed over last night so we got up early and headed over to the ditch for a quick session before work. It was pretty cold out but at least it was dry. The ditch is in the same condition as yesterday despite some rain overnight. We skated for a half hour before heading home. I was really tired this morning and not in the best of moods.
The session cheered me up a bit but also took a bit out of me. I would've rather gone back to sleep when I got home then go to work for 11 hours, but c'est la vie. On the upside, I found out I have 2 sick days left this year at work. Since I don't plan on being sick this month I'll have to pretend.
|
11.26.02
It looks like the ditch is finally drying up. The upper half was skatable today, so I could get a descent session in. It was nice to be able to get some lines going, but I really miss being able to use the whole ditch. I skated for about 20 minutes before my board went into the standing water by the pipes. It was too wet to continue so
I called it day.
|
11.25.02
I stopped by the ditch today before work and found it still pretty wet. I swept it out and tried to push the water towards the pipe. There was a small section dry so I was able to take a couple runs, but it wasn't wide enough to get any lines. It was fairly warm out so I think it may dry up a bit more. Matt stopped by later and said
it was a little dryer and he was able to get some decent runs in.
|
11.24.02
I put up some pics of old stencils that I had done. I made all three in 2000 and at this point I don't even know where the actual stencils ended up. I also put up a page for the Stafford bowl and I put up some pics of Matt and I skating Stafford a couple entries below.
|
11.23.02
Today was pretty sunny so I hoped that the ditch would dry up. I swung by on my way back from lunch and found that the upper half was almost completely dry except for one side had wet leaves at the base of the bank. I swept them out and tried to spread the water out a bit. It looks like that half will dry up by the end of today. It was dry enough
to take a couple runs but my wheels got very slick very fast. After 2 or 3 runs I gave it one final sweep and then headed out. Hopefully it will stay dry so I can get some quick solo sessions before work this week.
|
11.22.02
I thought for sure that the ditch would be dry by now, or at least dry enough to skate part of it. Matt, Tim, and I stopped by but found it still soaked. We brought a shovel and a broom down and got rid of the leaves and tried to push some of the water towards the pipes. Its hard to tell if you're really making much of a difference, but it can't hurt.
|
11.21.02
Matt and I headed down to Stafford today. It drizzled a little bit on our way down but it stopped by the time we got into VA. We got to Stafford a little after noon and found the bowl locked. We hopped the fence and found the bowl to have some puddles of water and some leaves in it. It took us about 20 minutes to spread the water out with our feet and then with our shirts. We skated even though it was still kinda wet. After about an hour it was almost completely dry.
We had a pretty rad session. Matt is really getting the feel for skating roundwall. He pulled some sick bonelesses and tried some varial bonelesses but I don't think he landed any cleanly. I had some good runs today. I brought my pitchfork and did some airs over the hip. I did some cess slides on the extension and I think the
pics turned out pretty well. I can't decide which one I like better though. We headed out a little early to miss NoVA traffic.

11.20.02
The past two days I've swung by the ditch before work ready to skate and found it wet each time. It hasn't rained since Sunday so I was sure it'd be dry by today. I went by a little after 11 to find it still wet. I had some time to kill so I decided to stop by the Thrift store around the corner, but found that it was gone. 0 for 2. I didn't want to get to work early so I went down the road a bit to the thrift store on 450 and the Salvation Army on 210. Neither had much of anything good. At the Salvation
Army they had a pretty neat looking boxset of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles on tape. It opened up and had a coffin shaped window and some pretty cool inserts, but considering how I'm not into Anne Rice, vampires, or books on tape I decided to pass it up.

As you probably noticed, the site has a new look. I was dissatisfied with the old look so I decided to redo the layout. I got John from StreetTrash to make me some graphics, which turned out pretty bitchin' if you ask me. I updated the collection page today by putting up pics of the Hawk that Tim gave to me for my birthday and the Sacred Cow that
I got off Spy Hill Skates in a trade awhile back. A lot of people seem pretty down on the Sacred Cow graphics, but I like them. I think they are far better than the later sacred cow graphics. I also picked up a rad Servotron flyer printed on a thin piece of metal. If you haven't heard Servotron, you should check 'em out. They sound a bit like DEVO but they dress up as robots and sing about
the destruction of the human race and the creation of a utopia where robots rule. Pretty standard Sci-fi stuff I guess. And just in case anyone reading this is into Servotron and has a Gammatron Tshirt - give it to me. But seriously, email me.

Today was almost a total bust. Tim and I drove up to Timonium to go to a flea market style thing that ended up just being a bunch of people selling cheap shit. There were a couple cool things, like the knife table. The video table was pretty cool too, because they had so many random shitty movies. We were disgusted by the entire ordeal so we got back on 695 and head toward the PS Ditch. When we arrived we found it full of mud and water. We turned
around and headed home, almost ready to admit defeat. We got off in Riverdale and headed over to the ditch, which was dry except for a few damp areas. Nothing we couldn't skate through though. We had a pretty good session, most likely due to the angst that we built up from our earlier misadventures. Later on I headed down to DC with Corey and Erica to drink many beers at many bars. I kicked their asses in darts, but I think it was more due to beginners luck than
my skill.

11.10.02
Made some changes to the site, as you most likely noticed. I put up a new color scheme for all the pages except this one. I also registered bakerpools.net (should work in a day or two) and changed the name of the site. Piraticalskates.com will still work for a bit. I've been thinking about this change for awhile, and finally decided to switch it over today. The logo is
a photo that Steve took of the top stair of the Jungle bowl, which had the manufacturer's tag on it. I plan to make a better logo soon. It will most likely be a rather basic stencil.

11.09.02
I woke up early today to take Matt the airport. He's meeting up with Super Chinchilla Rescue Mission in Cali after their tour of Japan and roadieing for them back to the East Coast. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Anywho, I dropped Matt off at BWI a little after 10 and then headed down to Vans for the 12:15 session. There was a decent sized bowl session for the 10 o'clock session but thinned out
for the 12:15 session. I met Shane and Billy, two Critical Thrash boys from Newport News. It was a pretty rad session. I was definitely feeling it in my legs near the end. I need to skate roundwall more. Later in the evening I stopped by Steve's house for his surprise party. Nothing too crazy, just some ECRW guys hanging out. Steve got pretty drunk and was the life of the party. I won't go into too
much detail, but Steve's quote the next day says it all: "Speaking of violence, did i or anyone at the party punch me in the face?"

11.08.02
Today was an incredibly beautiful day. After Tim and Matt awoke we headed over to the ditch for an afternoon session. Although I didn't notice any difference, Tim said I was skating a lot faster than usual, and attributed it to skating the Pot Springs ditch yesterday. I pulled a couple nice f/s tailslides today, probably the best ones I've ever done. Everyone was skating pretty well today. I think everyone was loose from the yesterday's
ditch sessions.

11.07.02
Tim, Matt, and I decided to get up early (well, early for Matt and Tim) today and hit a ditch that Tim had found near Whitemarsh. I woke Matt and Tim up at 11 and we managed to get on the road a little after 11:30. After a little construction traffic on B/W parkway we arrived at the ditch. Part of it was wet, but luckily it had a makeshift dam to prevent most of the ditch from getting wet. This ditch is skated, but could use some work.
It has two metal pipes on the one side and no coping on the other. There is one drop in across from the pipes. The ditch is almost flat at the drop but begins to go downhill about 10 feet down. Once it begins its decent there are a lot of cracks, so it less like a snakerun and more like a obsticle course. All in all its a pretty fun ditch, but ultimately not worth the drive from DC. I took a pretty good fall trying to ollie onto the roll-in
from the street. I made it the next try. Tim and Matt both made it too. The ditch happens to be a couple exits away from the Pot Springs ditch, so we made a second stop on our way out. The Pot Springs ditch is looking pretty good. Some locals have placed the parking blocks better, put down some better roll-ins, and painted the bridge wall green to cover up the grafitti. They used the same green paint on the parking blocks
which made them very slick. Tim tried some wallrides today. He was getting pretty high on the wall but couldn't quite bring them back in. Another session or to at this ditch and I think he'll be pulling some high ones. I managed to pull a couple wallrides today. I also pulled some nice f/s ollie to tails on the stair. After we exhausted ourselves we hopped back in the van, swung by the record store and sat in 695 traffic before making it home.

11.02.02
I woke up today around 11 with a hunger to skate (and a hunger for food). I was surprised to find Corey still home, so I coerced him into swinging by the ditch on the way to get something to eat. Corey is just learning how to skate and still needs a bit more board control before taking on the ditch. He practiced a bit on the flat bottom and I gave him some pointers. I had a good session today. It was cold but I soon warmed up
and was skating pretty well. It was nice to clear my mind for a bit. Near the end of our session some people showed up, two younger kids and an older fellow showed up. The older guy was riding some experimental board that he made. It had extensions that were bolted under the trucks (acting as risors) which went straight out towards the nose and tail, making it look like the board was delaming. The deck was designed to help beginners
learn how to ollie, but didn't work out quite like he planned. It was still an interesting design though. I took a pretty nasty fall coming back in from the extension but managed to roll out of it pretty well. After a couple more runs we headed out.

10.31.02
A halloween session at FDR. Corey and I went up to Philly to see some haunted prison (one of Corey's obsessions) so we stopped at FDR for a quick session. Its been raining all week but was dry today so I hoped the park would be dry, or at least mostly dry. This was not the case. The two mellow bowls were dry, but thats it. The pool bowl had a large puddle but it could be carved over. The pockets on the side had some puddles
spotted about, and the bunker wall had a large puddle across the entire base. I skated for about 20 min to a half hour and decided to head over to the prison. FDR seemed to be a sign of things to come because the prison was closed. The trip wasn't a total loss, I got a little skating at FDR in, we hit a Waffle House on the way back, and we stopped and Baltimore and hit some record shops. All in all, it was a fun trip.

10.30.02
Its been awhile since I made it down to Vans for the regular session. I didn't know if I'd make it this morning either, but I set my alarm last night and figured I'd just see how I felt when I got up. When I awoke I was pretty tired, and was pretty torn whether to go back to sleep or get up skate. I managed to drag my ass out of bed and get ready, only to find it to be one of the most disgusting and miserable
days outside. Cold and wet are two things that do not go well together. I made it down to Vans just after 10 to find out that my ECRW corporate membership had expired. 11 dollars for 2 hours of skating is preposterous, but that's Vans for ya. Chris was there today so I was happy to know that I didn't pay 11 bucks for a solo bowl session. It took me a couple runs to get back into the groove of the bowl, but it
came back pretty quickly. After getting warmed up I had some good runs and even starting doing some cess slides over the hip. The first one was by accident, but after that I was able to control them. I skated the 6' for a bit with Chris, who has obviously been skating it quite a bit recently. He was pulling some sick b/s lipslides. All in all it was a rusty but good session. Vans lifted the pad rule for persons over
18, but the helmet rule is still in effect. Finally a step in the right direction. Now if they would only sandblast the bowl.

10.24.02
Matt and I planned to meet Jamie this morning for a ditch session. It was quite chile out when we picked up Jamie from the metro. We headed over to the ditch and had the first cold session of the season. After a bit we warmed up and were having a pretty rad session. I haven't skated with Jamie in quite a long time. He's still riding the same Wounded Knee board that he was when I last skated with him and he
still skates like a surfer. Now he's got the hair to match. He was doing a lot of slides and putting his hands down a lot. After about a half hour of skating I snapped a kingpin on a big boneless to tail. Luckily Matt had an old Santa Cruz Street Creep in his trunk so I road that for a bit. It was pretty fun but I definitely like having a nose on my board. Matt rode the street creep for a bit too and let me ride
his deck. As the session was winding down Tim showed up and added some new life. We skated for about an hour more and then we got some burritos and went our seperate ways.

10.18.02-10.20.02
Backwoods Blowout 8. Skatopia at its finest: Skating, Drinking, Fire, and lots of mud. Steve, Corey, and I headed out to the farm on Friday morning. I drove about half of the way out and then handed the wheel over to Steve. We got there and it was still light out. The road seemed dry so we drove up the hill and set up camp. There were definitely a lot less people here than in the spring, but it was
still a decent turn out. We headed down to the bowl for a session. There weren't too many people skating so it was easy to get some runs in. I was skating extra sloppy today. I'm not sure if its because I haven't skated any roundwall, especially big roundwall in awhile or if I was just a bit off today. Either way, I was sliding around a lot and taking a lot of falls. With the colder weather coming in
it was harder to catch my breath. I was seriously winded after only a couple runs. I kept it up for a bit and then decided to check out the fullpipe. I took a couple runs and managed to get some oververt. I was completely drained and decided to go back up the hill to get some warmer clothes and some beer. We had trouble starting a fire in the drizzle and ended up hanging with the El Destructo crew. Steve got
pretty wasted and a fun time was had by all. The next day I woke up and was sore and decided not to skate. We started a fire and Steve got a bit of wood. He chopped down a small tree but couldn't drag it back. I took a nap as the dark was falling and got up to find Steve and Corey were gone. I went down the hill to find them and took a few slides on my way down. I was quite muddy by the time I got to the bottom,
but not as muddy as one would expext. I watched some skating and a band and then headed with Steve and Corey back up the hill. Much to my delight, we burned the couch and some car doors that we found. A little later one of the locals decide to smash some of the windows out of his best friends car, which had got two flats and wasn't going anywhere for a bit. One thing led to another and he decided to burn the car. He
kept saying 'I don't know why I'm doing this, this is m'best friend'car!' It went up in a blaze of glory.
The next morning I got up and was not feeling well. I suspected this was due to the hangover but I think it was that coupled with the flu, which I had the next day. Steve drove all the way home, which is a pretty easy drive for him.
|
10.12.02
It rained Thursday and Friday. I sat around both days wishing it would dry up. Saturday came around and the rain had stopped and pavement was dry. Matt and I had promised to help Steve move some couches today. After the move we headed up to the ditch in hopes to find some other locals but no one else was around. It was extremely humid out and the bugs were rampant. Matt chastised me for getting
a bug in my eye, but then he got them in his eyes, nose, and mouth and wound up with a couple bites. Matt learned a valuable lesson - I can control insects. He won't be mocking me again so soon.
|
10.09.02
Steve couldn't make this weeks vans session. With that in mind I ended up staying up late last night and couldn't get myself up at 9 to go down by myself. I ended up getting up at around 11 and going over to the ditch solo. It was a pretty peaceful session, but fun none-the-less. I worked on my tailslides a bit, which weren't sliding much. It was pretty cool out and the bugs
weren't out this early, making this a pretty nice and relaxing session.
|
10.03.02
Matt, Tim, and I headed over to the ditch for evening session. We called up Vogel on the way over and he made a rare appearance. I was skating very well today. I worked a little on carving the tight channels and coming back out. I was able to make it out a couple times but not with much speed. Tim pulled some sick f/s laybacks today. I've never seen him do them and he
just busted some out. I got some decent tailslides in today. I really want to go back and do some more. It seemed as though everyone
was skating their best today. This was definitely a sick session.
|
10.02.02
Another Vans session with Steve and Chris. My knee is finally starting to feel normal again. I did a couple knee slides today with minimal discomfort. I skated the bowl and the 6' today and was skating pretty well. I did some nice b/s grinds through the small bowled corner on the 6'. The bowl was feeling pretty good today. Steve and I were working on our f/s grinds,
trying to get them down more consistantly. Chris pulled some nice airs over the hip and is starting to get out of the bowl a little. I starting trying to roll out of the big bowl and manual to roll-in in the small bowl. I came pretty close one time but didn't make it. There's always next time...
|
09.25.02
Steve and I headed down to Vans for a weekly session, which we've missed the last couple weeks. Bitter Chris showed up to, which was a bit of a surprise since both his cars were pretty smashed up while parked outside his house. My knee has been feeling better, but I still wanted to take it easy today. I stayed in the bowl for the most part, but took some runs on the
concrete street course too. It was nice to come back and skate the familiar bowl after skating a lot of other stuff. Steve took a nasty fall today and was skating on about 4 or so hours of sleep so stopped a little early. I was pretty tired myself, but still had fun today.
|
09.20.02
Once again, Matt, Tim, and I headed out for a ditch session, this time at the Riverdale ditch. Not skating this ditch for a couple weeks must have taken its toll on me because I couldn't seem to land much today. Regardless, I still had a lot of fun. Matt wanted to move some parking blocks around since there was an extra but I was far too tired and didn't want to
put extra weight on my knee. He ended up pushing it to the edge near the pipes that no one hits much. Its kind of in an awkward place but I still disastered it. Hopefully I'll get back into my groove by the next session.
|
09.19.02
Matt, Tim, and I headed over to the Shady Grove ditch today. This ditch is small but it has good transitions and is really fun. I had some nice b/s 5-0 grinds across the entire parking block. I got some nice f/s grinds in on it too. I was definitely feeling it today. I didn't want to try too much today since I'm trying to take it easy on my knee. Tim pulled some sick f/s 50-50s and grabbed off (I believe these are referred to as Ox grinds
since Pete the Ox does them so much). It looked badass so I had to give it a try. After a couple attempts I landed some nice ones. This was my first session after SF and I definitely felt the change in humidity. We skated to Metallica and Slayer and then called it a day.

09.10.02-09.17.02
San Francisco. Anne and I headed out to SF for a week. We stayed at Pat and Reed's, the same two Steve and I stayed with in San Diego and Boston. Pat and Reed have been living in the city for a couple of months and haven't made it out to all the parks yet. Reed picked us up from the airport Tuesday morning and we
went back to his apartment. We got settled and then headed out to Berkeley park. Reed had thought the park opened last Saturday but it wasn't open yet. We headed over to Alameda since it was the closest. This park was poorly built but was still fun. The walls of the bowl are more like banks and aren't consistant. It was really hot at the park and after a couple hours we headed back to SF. Wednesday Pat, Anne, and I hit
the Piedmont park. This park requires full pads and is also poorly built. The bowl is pretty fun but has a danger pocket. I found some nice lines and managed to pull some sweepers and some f/s grinds on the concrete lip where they neglected
to put coping. The park also has a snakerun with some steep walls and mellow walls, reminiscent of the Lancaster park. After Piedmont we headed back over to Alameda for a short session at sundown and to meet up with Pat's girlfriend. I got some nice carvegrinds and Pat launched some airs over a pyramid. At both parks someone told us about the Novato park so we hit this park on Thursday. None of us had seen any pics of the park and we had some trouble finding directions. We made it out to Nevato and drove around a bit until finding some sketchy dudes who knew where it was. We pulled up to the park and were
pleasantly surprised with a nice snakerun like bowl. It was a heated session but I still got my share of runs in. I found some nice lines and threw some sweepers over a hip and some b/s airs another. On one of the sweepers I hung up and landed hard on my
knee that was still recovering. Like a dumbass I wasn't wearing kneepads and hurt it pretty bad. Pat, who is still coming back from a broken ankle, was feeling it so we stopped for ice on the way home. Friday morning Anne and I were out in the city and I picked up a knee brace, which helped out a lot. Reed, Anne, and I picked up Pat from school
and headed out to Ripon. Ripon was one of the parks that I was really looking forward to and I wasn't disappointed. This park has a lot of lines and is a lot of fun. It also has a vert wall, which is a change from the parks we had been to. I got some nice f/s grinds, f/s airs, and
sweepers on the vert wall. Pat launched some nice ollies over the pyramid. We headed home and stopped by some empty (or so we thought) pools that we had glimpsed from the highway on our way out. We stopped in front of the house, which was abandoned looking and had a for sale sign out front. The backyard was fenced so I walked in the
neighbor's yard - which also seemed to be abandoned. I got to the back of the neighbors house and found a nice ameoboid that was almost completely full. I hopped up onto the 8' fence and peeked over to find a square pool filled with debris. It would've been sweet to skate a pool on my birthday, but I guess Ripon was good enough. We headed back and went to a local out door bar, which was quite
an experience. Saturday morning we headed out to the Vans park in Milpitas for the Tim Brauch Memorial Contest. We watched the contestants warm up in the bowl before the contest. Benji Galloway was ripping and I had a pretty good feeling he might win, especially after seen what he did to FDR last 4th of July. The contest started and everyone started ripping. Pete
the Ox was skating like a madman. Full speed ahead the whole time. It was rad to see him skate in person. Brewce Martin was ripping with his usual style. He gave me his business card afterwards which I'll scan in soon. Cab was skating the bowl so smooth, easy grinds and looong rail slides. There were times when 5 people were skating the bowl at the same time. It was absolute madness. Benji came out on top
after throwing down a McTwist, some kickflips, and some sick tailslide reverts through the corners. Jimmy the Greek came in second and Cab third. It was rad to see the bowl shredded. We came back the next morning and there was still a healthy dose of coping chunks in the bottom. This bowl was the other thing I was really looking forward to on the trip. It took me a couple runs to get the hang of it
but I found some nice lines. I really like the shallowend corners and got some nice f/s carvegrinds through them. I also got some f/s carvegrinds in the deepend as well some f/s airs and sweepers. Pat had some nice grinds and beat me to the first grind by 1 run. It took Reed a bit to get the hang of it but he was hitting tile by the end of the session. He also grinded in. Pat and I both rolled in. It seemed a lot simpler
than rolling into the Vans bowl in VA. After the session we headed back and chilled out for the rest of the day. We were hoping that the Berkeley park would open this weekend. Everyone we asked had a different answer on when it would open. We picked up Pat from School Monday afternoon and headed over. It turns out the park opened Sunday and it was still packed even though kids were still in school. There were a ton of pros
out today and they were ripping. I was leaving the next day so I figured I had to get my runs in now. It was a snake session for a bit but I still snuck my fair share of runs in. I got some nice b/s carvegrinds in the deepend pocket and some f/s grinds on the deepend flatwall. I also threw down some sweepers and cess slides in the deepend. Dan Drehobl was ripping the hardest today with some sick transfers.
Some of the Antihero guys were rippin it up and Gonz threw down some sick bonelesses and rode a BMX bike around the bowl for a bit. I skated for about an hour or so and then watched the pros rip it up. We headed back to the apartment where I got up on some sleep. Tuesday morning Reed dropped us off at the airport. I ended up skating 6 parks in 7 days and saw a lot of pros rip Milpitas and Berkeley. It was definitely a lot of fun and I'd like
to hit some of the parks again.

Matt and I hit the ditch today at the perfect time. The sun was just going down but we still had an hour of daylight left. We skated until it was too dark. I worked on my f/s grinds and my b/s 5-0s. Both felt really good today and I was able to do them across entire parking blocks. Is there a better feeling?

09.05.02
Matt, Tim, and I headed over to the ditch today. Its been awhile since I skated with Tim so it was nice to session with him. We skated for about an hour before heading back home.

Steve and I hit Vans for the weekly session. I was really tired this morning when I got up and was still feeling it when we got to the park. This was the first wednesday that school was in session so the park was practically deserted, except for the homeschoolers of course. Bitter Chris showed up today so we had a decent session. I skated a little of everything today. I got some
nice f/s grinds on the 6' mini and some nice ones in the deepend of the bowl too. Steve worked for a bit on his nose manuals and also threw up some nice airs. It was a pretty rad session even though I was tired. All I can think about at work is frontside grinding.

09.02.02
Labor Day. I had off today and met up with Matt for a ditch session. It wasn't too hot out but it was pretty humid. The new transitions on the ditch have chipped away and its as dangerous as ever now. Its definitely stil skatable as long as you know whats up. I was really feeling the f/s and b/x 5-0 grinds today. Matt was trying some b/s laybacks and ended up crushing his
fingers between his board and parking blocks. He seemed to be in a bit of pain as he ran laps around the van. We headed home to ice it down and put some beers in him. He seemed ok after a couple of hours but had a nice purple finger.

I set up the libtech deck last night and really wanted try it out. It was pouring down rain when I got up so a ditch session was out of the question. I had talked to Steve about hitting Vans before work so I called him up and he was down. I got in my car only to find out I had left the sunroof cracked and my car was soaked. We got down to Vans and were surprised
to see so many older guys. I knew some came out sunday mornings but I didn't realize how many. There were a lot of guys sessioning the bowl so I knew it would be good day. The new deck felt a little weird at first but I got used to it after a couple of runs. It feels a lot stiffer than a wood deck. It also makes it feel like the trucks are looser, but they feel more
responsive. The rail channels felt rad when on my airs. The bowl session was pretty heated at times and I saw some sick skating go down. One guy was pulling fakie grinds in the deepend. Denny Riordon, who used to ride for Toxic, was ripping it up with some huge f/s airs in the deepend and some f/s laybacks and smiths in the shallow. A couple guys threw down some inverts
in the bowl too. I had a pretty good session and it was fun skating with a large group for a change. I think I'll have to come out to more sunday sessions.

I didn't have any plans for today. I called up Steve to see what he was up to and he was headed up to Philly and asked me if I wanted to join him. I was watching the AntiHero 2 song video this morning with some FDR footage so I was fiending to skate it. We got up to FDR and it looked like it was gonna rain. We skated for about an hour before
it started drizzling. I skated the pool pocket for the most part. I worked on f/s carves, which I had never done in there for some reason. They felt really natural and I found some new lines. Steve was b/s grinding the pool pocket all day and trying some airs on the bunker wall. I was getting really close to f/s grinding the pool pocket but I kept chickening out.
As it started to rain I knew I had only a couple more runs before it was too slick, so I took some pushes and threw up a nice one. I threw down a sweeper in the pool pocket for my last run and we split. After leaving FDR we got some philly hoagies and then hit the shops on south street. I picked up a 9.25x34 libtech deck with rail
channels.

It was raining when I got up today. Luckily, the session was indoors so that wasn't a problem, although if the rains continue it may interfere with weekend road trip plans. Steve and I hit Vans this morning. Bitter Chris showed up. Today was the first time I've skated with him since he got back from Washington/Oregon. Needless to say he
had some nice stories about the concrete wonderland. A couple other guy showed up to skate the pool today. I've seen them there before but don't recall their names. It was a pretty nice bowl session, although I didn't really do much. I had a couple of nice airs today which made me feel pretty good. I got some fan mail today, which doesn't
happen very often. This one's from Jaime: "I just need to give you a double thumbs up on the front page of your website pic with you in that scuba diving helmet & ECRW shirt." Here's the pic in question. Thanks for the email bro.

I got up early this morning and headed over the ditch. I hoped that Tim would join me but he still sleeping when I left and I knew he would be for awhile. It was pretty nice out and I had some nice runs. The new concrete is already chipping away and parts of the transitions are
as bad as they were. I ended the session with a slam off an ollie on the hip. It was a nice quick session before work. Tim was still sleeping when stopped by home on my way to work.

08.21.02
Steve and I hit Vans for the weekly session. There were more kids than usual here today. I was pretty beat but skated the bowl the entire time to avoid the kids. I had some good runs and tried some thrusters on the flat wall. I usually pick my front wheels up and slide
but I tried keeping them down. It felt a little weird but I got some ok ones.
|
08.20.02
Steve and I have decided to get the Roman Salamander going again so we started bailing today. We bailed for an hour before work and hope to make this a weekly even until the pool is skatable. Hopefully we'll be getting some help.

Massive update today. I put a couple new decks on the collection page. I also removed the javascript off the page so it doesn't open up new windows anymore. The graphic program I'm using (paint) doesn't have the capabilities to properly resize pics so I can display them on a page. I decided to just put links to the pics and let you view them in whatever size they are. I also put up a bunch of Zorlac ads that I scanned in this weekend, includeing two featuring Rick
Charnoski (one Metallica ad and one Zombu ad). I scanned in some pics this weekend. Check the 07.26.02 for some session pics. Here's a pic of me in front of a burning car we passed on the way back from the shady grove ditch. Here's a pic of Matt on tour in Pittsburg at the 37 bowl.

Steve and I planned to hit the Riverdale ditch today. Steve's car is still in the shop so I drove down to pick him up and swing by Zion. Corey came along for the ride and to get a bite to eat at Burrito Joynt. Once again, we hit some traffic on the way to Steve's, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. We swung by Zion for Steve to pick up a new street setup. I picked up the Plorida Fools video, which is an excellent video featuring Florida's pools and the people who rip them.
On our way back we ran into a ton a traffic. We got back around 4:30 and waited around for it to cool off a bit before skating. Around 6pm we headed over to the ditch. I thought some of locals might come out as the sun went down but no one else showed up. We skated for a bit and then started trying some new stuff. Steve was trying f/s rocks and pulled some nice ones. I was trying fakie to axle, and was able to pull some. We started trying to utilize the channel. Getting in is not too
hard but making your back out is a challenge. After numerous runs I was able to get out but not with much speed. Steve was having problems hitting some large cracks but managed to make it out once or twice, also without much speed. We skated until around 8pm and headed home. There was a show at WMUC tonight so I decided to head up there. Some band called Peralta that Matt had met on tour was playing, and he told me they all had mustaches. When they arrived I was quite upset that
they had all shaved them off. They were a pretty good band none the less. Matt and I skated some ledges after the show but were both pretty tired.

I decided to head down to Stafford again today and pick up Steve along the way. Matt wasn't doing anything so he decided to come along. On the way down to Steve's we ran into a ton of traffic of 295 and 495. It took us about an hour and half (instead of the usual 25 min) to get to Steve's. From Steve's we headed down to the camera shop, and then decided to attempt to go as far south as we could before getting on 95 (which is
always backed up in NoVA). We ended up getting a little lost and ending up about where we started. We got on 95 in the HOV lanes so we didn't hit too much traffic until they ended. We got to Stafford around 5pm (only 3 hours after leaving the house!). We were hoping some locals would show up and session but only a few people were there and they weren't skating the bowl too much. It was a pretty rad session overall. It was very humid
so we were sweating a lot. I pretty much worked on the same lines I did last time. Steve found a nice line to hit the wall ride and was getting pretty high. Another 5" and he would've been grinding the top. Matt was working on carving the corners and started getting the hang of it b/s. We left around 8pm and hit waffle house. Thankfully we didn't hit any traffic on the way home.
|
08.15.02
Matt told me that some of the locals did some cement work at the ditch so we went over to check it out. The transitions are fixed on the wall with the extension. These were chipped away pretty badly and was getting to be quite a hazard. It was nice to not have to worry about them anymore. We skated for a bit but it was pretty humid out so we were sweating a lot. Matt pulled a sick b/s layback.

08.14.02
Another Vans session. Jay is still hurt so he didn't make it in. Bitter Chris didn't show up either so it was just me and Steve. We both seemed pretty tired today. I worked on my grinds in the bowl for most of the day. It took me a couple tries but I got a f/s grind on the flat wall coming out of a double f/s carve in the deepend. It wasn't a very good grind but I rode away.

08.13.02
Steve and I hit the Ivy bowl today before work. There was about 3" of water in the bottom when we got there. We spent 10 or 15 minutes bucketing it and drying it. It was incredably hot out today. I started taking runs and was sweating a lot. Luckily I brought some water so I didn't get too dehydrated. It took me a couple of tries to get over the light today. Its been quite awhile since I've skated the bowl so it took a bit of getting used to again. After getting over the light I wanted to try some small airs. I was thinking about trying them over the kink but the
transition is a bit weird there and kept throwing me off. I ended up doing a small one under the coping on the wall with the loveseat.
I started working on the lowend pocket and was getting some nice carves. Steve was hitting this too and getting some tile. I started getting a little woozy after this and sat down to cool off. Steve took some runs around the bowl while I was resting. I decided to not push it so I called it a day. After Steve was done I got a couple more carves in the lowend pocket and we left. We stopped at the Roman on the way to get some food and it is pretty full. It is definitely going to take a couple days of bucketing or a pump to get it skatable again.

I was looking through some old photos on my computer today and I came across some rad pics. Here's two that Don took of me in the summer of 2000. Both pics are me ollieing from the ditch to a sketchy wooden extension. I found three nice ones of Tim at the ditch, all taken by Don. I'm not sure when they are from, but I would guess sometime in 2001. The first one is a nosegrind, the second is a boneless, and the last one is a 5-0. I also updated the
links page today - I added a bunch and put up a pic of my knife.

Matt suggested hitting the Shady Grove ditch today and it seemed like a pretty good idea. I had never been there and really wanted to check it out. We drove over and parked near the metro. We skated down to the Metro pay lot and then walked down a small path in the woods. There is a small stream to hop and some rocks to walk over before getting to the ditch. Once hitting the ditch you have to walk down about 200 feet before getting to the 'skateable' area. Its pretty much skatable the whole way but there is some overgrowth
that needs to be trimmed back and some low hanging branches hear and there. Its a pretty nice little ditch. Great transitions at the bottom but the walls are pretty mellow and small. There is 1 parking block, 1 metal pipe, 2 plastic pipes, some cinder blocks, and a steep piece of concrete. It seems like it would be a real pain to get stuff here, especially parking blocks. The one parking block that was there was pretty smooth and I got some nice f/s slash grinds and b/s 5-0s. The PVC pipes are a bit harder to stay on but you can grind much farther. Matt got some nice grinds across
the entire pipes. There were some cinder blocks placed to make a ledge and I threw up some decent tailstalls on them. I like the concept of the ledge at the top of the ditch and would like to implement something similar at the Riverdale ditch. Matt was pulling his usual tricks, but had some trouble with the short height of the ditch. I tried some lipslides and feeble grinds on the plastic pipes but my wheels kept digging into the dirt and stopping my board. I got a couple nice f/s grinds on the steeper concrete coping, which is probably the best thing I pulled there. The crete was pretty
rough so I don't think that it gets grinded much, if at all. I left some aluminum there for the next guy. It was a pretty rad session, although it would've been nice to skate with some of the locals. I definitely want to come back to this ditch periodically for some more sessions.
We got back pretty early and I found out my brother was in town. We met him for some burritos and then headed over to the beer store where Tim works. He was just getting off so we decided to hit the Riverdale ditch. My brother skated his old h-st, which I still have set up. We got there a little before 7 and skated until it got too dark. Matt, one of the locals who has been skating the ditch since the 80s, showed up and ripped it. He has such a smooth style and can carve into the channels, slide around, and then carve back out. It was a pretty nice session. I haven't skated
the ditch in the evening for awhile and it was nice to skate in the cooler weather. I'll have to make it over for late sessions more often.

Matt is back from tour and today is the first day I was able to skate with him. I had been fiending to skate the Stafford bowl lately, and Matt was down to check it out. Charlie was down for the session too so we headed down a little after 1pm. We arrived around 2:30pm and there were already a couple people skating the bowl. Matt and Charlie decided to check out the street course a little first but quickly came up to the bowl. The street course is not worth the drive
down there. One of the guys there was ripping. He was a younger guy but definitely skated like he was older. His bag of tricks is not something you see younger guys doing these days. He threw down some nice b/s laybacks, railslides, and fingerflip sweepers as I was putting my pads on and stretching out. I found the line I was doing last time immediately. I like dropping and hitting the wall ride right away. I got a ton of nice f/s carvegrinds in the corners, particularly the one closest to the stairs. I got a couple b/s ones too, but I wasn't really expecting
those. My line throws me at the ext. or the wall ride f/s so I got some nice grinds in the deep pocket and some nice f/s kickturns on the wallride. Matt and Charlie took some runs in the bowl. Matt dropped in and looked pretty comfortable in the bowl. He hit a lot of walls and got a nice b/s grind in one of the corners. Charlie hasn't skated too many bowls. He was a little hesitant to drop in and it took him a couple tries. By the end of the day he was dropping in pretty comfortably and learning to carve the corners. The session was
pretty happening and I decided to break out the pitchfork, which is always a crowd pleaser. I got it out of my car and when I returned everyone was starring at me with their mouths open. There was a kid ready to dropin with his board on the coping and I walked up and looked at him, motioning to go ahead. He waited a moment and then picked his board up and told me to go. I dropped in and took a decent run. When I hopped out all the kids were asking me about it. A rollerblader asked what it was. I looked up at him and said, "Its the Blader
Hater." He gave me a somewhat troubled look and didn't ask any more questions. The pitchfork felt much better than the last time I skated it here. I took off the 92a Bullet 66's and put on the Spitfire Experimentals (99a, ~63mm). These felt much better and I was able to get a lot more speed. I took some more runs on it and got some nice carvegrinds in the corners and a couple in the deeppocket. I managed to pull a couple sweepers on it which made me quite happy. After the session had been going for awhile Blaze showed up, followed shortly by Scott. I hadn't seen either since the Skatopia bowl
bash so it was nice to see them. Blaze rips the bowl up with a large bag of tricks. He was grinding the hell out of the bowl. He showed me his trucks and they were ridiculously ground down. He said he hates
new trucks, and so he has been skating the same ones for over two years. I think he'll be forced to get new trucks soon. I was watching Scott skate and he was taking an interesting line. He would hit every corner b/s and then b/s the deep pocket. He also did the same line f/s. I tried it a couple times and it is pretty fun. The last carve in the deep pocket is a little hard to pull and a lot harder to grind. I was having a lot of trouble remembering my old line that brings me to the hip f/s. I finally figured it out and was able to pull some nice f/s airs over the hip. I even pulled one on the
pitchfork. My knee was feeling pretty good today. I did one knee slide on it and it was sore but it didn't hurt for too long. Overall it was a great session, the kind that leaves you thinking about the bowl until you can get back. Matt took a couple pics of me skateing the pitchfork, so hopefully they'll come out ok and I'll put them up.
We left Stafford a little after 5pm. On our way back we decided to get some Burritos at Burrito Joynt, which happens to be right near the Franconnia Ditch, so we made a pit stop. Matt and Charlie were stoked on it. We skated it for a half hour or so, mainly carving around and doing some slides and ollies. Matt was pulling his usual array of unorthodox tricks. It was a nice wind-down session after Stafford, and for Matt and Charlie, it was another fresh spot and another ditch under their belts.

08.07.02
Another weekly Vans session. Bitter Chris didn't show up today, so it was just Steve, Jay, and me. As usual I spent most of my time in the bowl today. My knee is still pretty sore, but luckily I didn't have to knee slide today. After finding some nice grind lines in the Ocean Bowl I decided to work on them in the kidney. I have trouble doing b/s grinds consistently. I never seem to know exactly where the coping is, and I usually end up b/s grinding by accident during high carves. I tried to b/s grind the kidney a lot today and feel I have
a little better understanding of where the coping is during my carves. I started doing them consistently by the end of the session. I wanted to get a double f/s grind in the deepend on my double carve line. I usually grind the second wall, but it is actually harder to grind the second wall after grinding the first. I got a nice grind in on the first wall and didn't have enough speed to carvegrind the second. I slashed up at the coping as I passed and got a nice grind
but came out of it pretty wonky. I managed to stay on and continue the run. It felt great grinding both walls. I'd like to get a third grind on the long wall that I hit coming out of the second carve. I usually do thrusters there but I think I'll be able to throw up a slasher. There's always next week. Jay didn't skate the bowl too much today. He said he had a pulled hamstring and was taking it easy. He was skating the vert ramp and hurt it again and decided to call it quits for
the day. There were an awful lot of kids giving the bowl a try today. One kid dropped in and immediately ate shit into the deepend. I think he landed on mostly padded areas. Another kid kept sliding out as he was going into the deepend. He kept going towards the deepend in a sideways slide and just put his hand back before he fell. The roller bladers faired a little better, but of course lost in the grand scheme of things. It was a pretty nice session, although I spent most of the time skating the bowl by myself.

08.02.02-08.04.02
Beach blanket bong out! Steve had a party at the beach so I went down for some swimming and some skating. The cast consisted of Steve, Jen, Bitter Chris, Terri, E.D. (from NC), Steve and Jason (from PA), Anne, and me. The session was at Exodus on friday night so we headed over and got a couple rad hours of skating in. I was skating pretty well and tried some Texas Plants. The first try bringing it back in I fell really hard on my knee on the flat.
This was incredably painful but I tried two more times and managed to bring the last one back in. Chris was skating the bowl pretty well and was grinding around the corners. The PA boys stuck to the street course for the most part. E.D. was ripping pretty hard and grinding every wall. I did a couple of speed runs and got going pretty fast. I got some nice b/s airs over the hip with the speed. I landed some nice lien to tails, probably my best yet.
I was also a lot more consistant with them. It was a great session and we were all pretty beat up by the end.
Saturday the session was going down at the Ocean Bowl. We headed up there late afternoon and it was pretty hot when we arrived. It has been quite a while since my last Ocean Bowl session so I was looking forward to it. Its been so long that I forgot all my lines. I started working on a new one which turned out to be far better then the old ones. Chris and Terri felt the bowl was too messed up so they declined the session. At first I noticed it was a lot
more kinked then I remembered, but I soon got used to it. There is some plaster falling off on the hip but not where I hit it. There is also two missing tiles in the shallowend which served as a makeshift deathbox. E.D., Steve, and I all got some nice f/s slashes over the deathbox and Steve threw up some nice b/s's over it too. I managed to pull a decent sweeper in the deepend, but couldn't work it into a line. PA Steve was ripping up the street course with some sick ollies
over the hip and a 360 early grab. E.D. grinded everywall as he did
the night before. Steve was trying to find the line to hit the deepend f/s and finally found a nice one and threw up some f/s grinds. E.D. was trying some too but couldn't quite get on the coping. It is a hard line to find if you are goofy footed. Luckily, I'm not, so my f/s line is quite easy to find. I found a line where I double carve the deepend b/s, carve the flatwall towards the shallowend b/s, f/s a shallowend corner, and f/s the deepend pocket. I ended the
day with 4 grinds and a sweeper in one run. It was a definitely a great sesssion, especially after the sun started to go down and the air cooled a bit. I managed to avoid falling on my knee the entire session. Steve wasn't so lucky. He took a nasty fall before I got there where he hit the hip head on. Even though he was wearing a helmet he still got a knot on his head.
Sunday afternoon everyone seemed to do their own thing. I really wanted to head back to the Ocean Bowl. Chris and Terri went to Exodus and E.D. followed. Steve wasn't sure so I hoped he would show up at the Ocean Bowl. I skated the Ocean bowl for about an hour and was exhausted. It was really hot out and the sun was blazing. I skated by myself for a bit and them some locals showed up. I skated the bowl with them for a bit and then decided to call it quits. It was just too hot to skate
without shade. As I was leaving Dirty showed up, who we had missed all weekend. I talked to him for a bit and then headed out. On my way out I stopped by Exodus to see how the session was going. I took a couple runs on E.D.'s deck, who I found out skates really loose trucks. I still managed to pull an ok air. The sessions this weekend were great, but unfortunately there aren't any pics. I'm hoping to head up to the Ocean Bowl again because I can't stop thinking about her.

Steve and I hit vans for the weekly session. Bitter Chris showed up, as did Jay. It looks like we are getting a regular four man session started up. The new wheels felt great in the bowl today. I was sliding around a bit but everything was under control. I worked on some lien to tails and landed some. Jay is getting pretty good in the bowl. He is hitting tile consistantly and has thrown down some grinds. There was a little girl
at the session today who was dropping in and getting some lowend tile. She is gonna be really good if she sticks with it.

07.26.02
I was planning to go down to Stafford with Tim today for an early afternoon session. I awoke to the sound of rain outside my window. I lifted the curtain only to find my fears confirmed: the Stafford session was off. I tried going back to sleep but couldn't stop thinking about skating some roundwall. Steve had mentioned a possible trip to Exodus if the weather was not permitting of an outdoor session
so that was my last hope. Steve called me around 11am and said his car was still in the shop. I told him to get ready 'cause I'll be picking him up soon. I got dressed quickly, threw my pads in my bag, and headed down to Steve's. I picked him up and then backtracked to 50 and on to Exodus. We got there around 3pm. The bowl was pretty empty, only one other guy skating it, and he was ripping. I warmed up and found my old lines.
I didn't think the chunk out of my wheel would make much of a difference on the skatelite (it doesn't at Vans) but I could definitely hear and feel it in the bowl. After skating for a bit I went into the shop and bought a nice set of 63mm Spitfires. They are a bit skinnier then Spitfire Experimentals I've been riding but they are the same size and durameter, so it didn't make too much of a difference. My first run on the new
wheels was very smooth. I did take a fall after airing the hip though. I got used to these wheels almost immediately and was happy with the purchase. I worked on my stand up grinds in the bowl for quite a bit. After many tries I was able to grind through one of the mellow pockets. I also worked on some lien to tails and landed some nice ones. Steve was working on some sweepers and tried some b/s ollie to tails. He came pretty close to
landing the latter. I got pulled nice sweepers and airs in. Around 8pm the Wolfpack team showed up and ripped the street course. They were doing a demo at a local baseball stadium and decided to hit Exodus afterwards. It was fun to skate with Chris again. I haven't skated with him in quite awhile. Doug showed up too but was on
some cold medication and wasn't up for a session, although he did take a couple runs. We stayed until about 10pm and then headed home. It was a great 7 hour session, and I'm definitely feeling it in my legs now.

07.24.02
Its been a week since my last session and I've been fiending for one. I even woke up early this morning. Steve and I got down to Vans earlier than we have in quite awhile but had to wait for some soccer moms to fill out all the forms. I got some new bushings, the Indy soft ones, so I was interested to see what they felt like in the bowl. I took some runs and I didn't feel much difference. I loosened up my
back truck a little and took some more runs. I could really feel the difference after doing that. I was getting better carves and was able to maintain a lot more speed. The bowl was feeling very good today and I had a lot of board control. I was doing a lot more sliding around but I felt like I was in control the whole time. I skated the bowl for most of the session, with the exception of a couple runs on the 6'.
I landed a couple lien to tails. They are getting more comfortable but I really have to work on my landing. Bitter Chris and Jay showed up today and we had quite a session. My wrist wasn't bad today but I wore a wrist guard and didn't fall on it. I think this was my best vans session in a long time.

07.17.02
Steve and I hit up Vans as usual. Bitter Chris showed up too, as usual. The bowl was super slick today so Chris got some employees to mop it out. This forced me into a miniramp session which was pretty fun. Stand up grinds came back to me pretty quick. Steve pulled some sick f/s ollies over the hip. After the pool dried up I headed back over. It was a definitely grippier. I skated it the rest of the session.
I started trying some crails. I was able to get some crail grinds in but couldn't get my tail on top of the coping. Steve tried some too but had the opposite problem; his board flew out of the bowl too much. On my last run I fell trying one and landed hard on my wrist. Its been sore for a bit but it was really sore from this. I think I'll have to take some days off.

Don was in town today. He was passing threw on his way to Virginia Beach so he stayed the night and came out to the ditch for a session with me and Tim. Tim was skating much better today then yesterday. I took a pretty hard fall on my wrist again. I think I may have to start wearing a wrist guard until it heals. Don is still skating his stealth wheels. I think they are 85a. It was great to session
the ditch with Don again. Last summer we skated almost every chance we got, so it was great to be out there with him again.

07.11.02
Tim and I hit the ditch today. Tim was getting kinda frustrated today. He was having some trouble landing tricks. When he is pissed off at other things he skates better, but when he is pissed off at skating he skates worse. We didn't skate too long. I was skating my new trucks and when I do 50-50s I grind the kingpin, which makes a hideous sound. I think I'll but the Grind King kingpins back in.

As usual, Steve and I headed down to Vans for our weekly session. I was anxious to find out how the new wheels felt in the bowl. The small chunk missing in the one wheel made the wheels sound like they were flat spotted, but only when skating the bowl. I put that wheel on the front right since that wheel always cones fastest. I need to skate some rough cement to cone it a little. Bitter Chris and Terri showed up today. It was nice to have a four man (or rather 3 man and 1 woman) session in the bowl. My airs were feeling really good today and I pulled some of the highest ones I ever have today. I think
riding the punisher helped out a lot. I was able to pull some nice lien airs in the shallowend too. Aside from the helicopter noise my wheels felt great.

07.08.02
I woke up Roach and Gunn early this morning to skate the ditch. I called Steve and he came up for the session. We got to the ditch and Roach and Gunn were pretty stoked on the concrete work. They took some runs and started ripping. The new wheels felt great and I threw down some nice bert grinds. Gunn ollied onto the extension deck and then ollied back into the hip. Roach ollied in from the manhole cover. Its rad to see some people rip your local spot.

07.05.02-07.07.02
I hadn't planned on going on this trip but certain domestic factors along with Steve pushing me to go ended up with me in Ohio. Steve and I slept in Delaware the night of the 4th to get an early start. Friday morning we got up early and headed up to Asbury Park, NJ to skate the pool that we've heard so much about. Steve had skated two weeks ago and couldn't get it out of his head. We got there and hopped in the pool and started taking runs. This pool is insane. It is shaped like a giant backwards S and has nice transitions all around. I found an ok line almost immediately. After a couple runs I tried going frontside in the deepend
and was getting high. After a couple times I threw up a nice f/s grind. There are a lot of nice pockets in this pool and it is hard to hit them all. I think I hit every pocket at least once. I started trying sweepers in the deepend. The first try I just hopped out and then dropped back in to see what it would feel like. It felt very smooth, easier than dropping into the pool pocket at FDR. After a couple tries I was able to pull some decent sweepers. Steve told me to hit the deepend pocket, which I hadn't been in yet. I found a line in there and it
was pretty sweet. Its amazing how much you can skate this pool
without hitting that pocket. We skated for about 30-45 min until some woman yelled something about the police from a high rise. We took our last runs, which was a sweeper for me and a sick carvegrind in one of the lowend pockets for Steve. We headed out and got in the car. We pulled around the corner and found two cop cars parked. I'm not sure if they were there to bust us or what but we didn't stay to find out. After Asbury Park we headed down to Philly to get some Hoagies and stop by FDR to meet Roach, a guy we skated with at the Arcade warehouse in San Diego. He wasn't sure if he wanted to come with us, so we took some runs
while he talked to some people. There were a lot less people around today so I took some runs using the entire park. I played in the mellow bowls but there is not much speed in there. I pulled some more sweepers in the pool pocket and took a hard slam on the last one. Luckily I was wearing an elbow pad which absorbed most of the impact. Roach was ripping FDR up with some sick crailslides and f/s grinds in the pool pockets, some ollies on the hips, and some high carves in the oververt. He decided to come with us and brought his friend Peter
Gunn along since we had the room. We had to drive down to 695 to get out to Ohio so we decided to stop
and skate the Pot Springs ditch. I got some nice wallrides in and some grinds and disasters on the parking blocks. Roach pulled a nosepick on the wall and Gunn did some nice high wallride. Gunn also pulled some nice f/s rockandrolls. We skated for about 30 minutes or so and then got back on the road destined for Skatopia. We arrived at Skatopia at around 1:30am Saturday morning. We turned on the lights and took some runs in the bowl and fullpipe. Roach and Gunn caught on to the bowl pretty fast. We were all pretty
beat so we didn't skate very long. The next day it was too hot to skate so we hung out until the sun started going down. Bitter Chris
and his wife, Terri, showed up late in the afternoon and took some runs on the outdoor ramp. Everyone started skating about this time. I took some runs in the fullpipe but was pretty tired after skating it by myself. I went over to the ramp and took some runs but didn't do much. Brewce was trying to air the gap between the ramp and fullpipe but didn't pull it. It is a BIG gap. Roach dropped into the oververt and made it but ate it on the waterfall and took a nasty fall. As the sun went down we moved the session inside to the bowl. I skated the bowl better tonight than I ever have. I got some nice f/s grinds and f/s airs
in. I took a really hard slam but it couldn't stop
me. Brewce told me I skate the bowl a hell of a lot better than I skate the vert ramp. Brewce was ripping it up as usual, skating faster than everyone. Brandon, his son, was ripping with some high airs in the deepend and some nice transfers over the hip. Gunn threw down a b/s and f/s layback in the deepend. Roach had some nice f/s airs in the deepend and a sick crailslide. It was definitely an awesome session and I was pretty beat up by the end of it. I woke up Sunday in a lot of
pain. I was far to stiff to skate. Roach and Gunn took some runs in the bowl but were mostly just cruising. I found some Spitfire experimental wheels there. They were marked 65mm, 95a but were worn down to about 63mm. I switched them with my Nicotine Danforth wheels which were just a little too soft. I left the Danforth wheels in the basket for the next Skatopian. The Spitfires had a small chunk taken out of them but it didn't seem to affect the ride. We left a little after 4pm and made it home at midnight. Roach and Gunn
crashed at my house. More pictures of the trip and the next day's ditch session here.

The 4th of July party at FDR is a blast. I headed up with some friends and met Steve there. I hadn't planned on skating too much but it seems like the heat kept some people away. Steve was already skating when I arrived. I grabbed my deck and took some runs. I found a nice line in the pool pocket and starting pulling some f/s cessslides while grabbing the coping on the hip. They felt a little wonky at first but I was able to pull them. I started feeling a little ill after skating for a bit so I took a break and got some water. There was some killer skating going down so I tried to take it all in. After resting for a bit
I started feeling a little better so I took some more runs. I pulled some sweepers in the pool pocket which felt great. I skated for a bit and then took a very hard slam on my wrist and decided to call it quits for the day. I watched some more skating and then took off.

07.03.02
Steve and I went down to Vans for our weekly session. Bitter Chris was there as usual. I spent most of the time in the bowl. I was pulling some nice airs today. Steve learned nosegrinds on the miniramps today and was pretty stoked on 'em. I rolled into the pool today for the first time in awhile. It felt great. There was a guy skating the little bowl today and trying to get up the nerve to drop in the big bowl. After some encouragement he finally dropped in and was soon hitting tile. He was really excited. Its pretty rad to see someone take their first steps into the roundwall. I expect to see him there a lot more now.

06.30.02
Charlie gave me a call and said he would be hitting the ditch around 1pm so I woke up Tim and we headed over. Charlie had just arrived when we got there and we caught him pissing in the woods. Tim had just gotten a $100 parking ticket for parking in front of our house so he was very pissed. This helps his skating and he was definitely busting out some rad shit. He pulled some b/s disasters without much difficulty. Charlie pulled a sick lipslide parking block transfer. Tim stepped it up and pulled an insane f/s grind parking block transfer. Were as Tim chose to take out his aggressions by pulling some sick tricks,
I chose to take out mine by skating till exhaustion. I worked on my line from yesterday some more. I took some long runs which ended up being a doubles run with Tim after I rebated one too many times. This was definitely a great session. Just what the doctor ordered.

06.29.02
I was really bored today and I had a lot on my mind so I decided that a session was in order. It rained a bit today which delayed my plans but around 8pm it looked pretty dry. No one was around so I headed over to the ditch for a solo session. There were some wet spots and some backed up water near the pipes but it was dry for the most part. I started taking some runs. I wasn't doing anything too great but I was definitely skating hard and getting lots of nice grinds in. I found a new line, or rather perfected one that I had dabbled with previously. I dropin, hit the first parking block with a frontside grind,
hit the extension with an axle stall, and then come back to hit a nice 5-0 along the entire last parking block. The second grind feels great and I was doing them for most of this session. Grinding always makes me feel better.
|
06.26.02
Steve's knees are pretty sore after his recent expedition to Louisville so I went down to Vans solo today. Luckily Bitter Chris was already there when I got there so I had someone to session with. I recently set up a Scum Trashcan 9" deck and took it for its maiden voyage today. It is shaped slightly differently than my last trashcan model but felt just as great. I was pulling some great airs today, a bit higher than usual. I also got some nice f/s grinds in the deepend pocket. Chris was grinding up a storm but couldn't manage to pull the b/s grab air over the hip. He's getting damn close though.
|
06.20.02
Matt is leaving to go on tour with 1905 so this was our last ditch session for a bit. Charlie was there when we arrived. I took my camera today to finally get some pics of the Moffer ripping it up. He was pulling some bad ass tricks that have no name. Matt definitely has a unique style. He busted some sick handplant trick to boardslide. Charlie getting more comfortable in the ditch and threw down some sweet f/s grinds. I took a burly fall on one of my early runs. I was hitting both hips and I got wheelbite on the second one and launched
up over the hip and landed in the flatbottom. I still got in a
great session with some 5-0 grinds and disasters. It was a great session and I'm glad to finally get some pics of Matt and Charlie up.

06.19.02
Steve and I headed down to Vans for our weekly session. Bitter Chris was there so we had a pretty decent sized session going. I put together my old Scum Beer Run 2 to skate, not realizing it had a big crack in it. I skated the bowl for the entire time as usual. I was working on my f/s double carves in the deepend and got some nice grinds in on my second pass. Chris was grinding it up as usual and working on catching some air and grapping over the hip. He got pretty close but wasn't able to pull it. Steve was working on his late grabs again and busting some huge airs but couldn't pull them back in. I like the feel of the 9" deck.
It felt a bit weird going back to it, but after some minor truck adjustments it felt good. I think I'll set up a new 9" deck to use as a bowl board and keep the punk point for ditch skating.

06.13.02
I headed down to Stafford today to meet Marc from the Cheeze bowl. He was coming up to pick up a ton of skatelite at Ramptech so we set up this session. I got to the park around noon and started skating. Some kids came up and took some runs on skateboards and rollerblades but I had the bowl to myself for the most part. I found my old line and got some f/s airs over the hip. The extension is now on one of the elevators so I started dropping in and hitting it. This put me into a new line that was pretty rad.
I got some f/s carvegrinds in one of the pockets. I also got some slash
grinds on the 7' area. Marc showed up around 1pm and we had a pretty bitchin session going. I pulled some sweepers all over the bowl and got some nice grinds in too. I also got a f/s kickturn on the extension. Marc was ripping it up with some b/s airs and pulled a texas plant on the 7' part. I brought my pitchfork deck and took some runs on it. I got up on the extension and also managed to pull a small air. I think I need to put some harder wheels on it. It started pouring at around 2pm so we headed up to Ramptech. The Stafford bowl is incredable. I definitely need to make it down much more often, I just hate fighting the traffic on the way home.

06.12.02
Steve and I went down to Vans for our usual weekly session. Bitter Chris was there so we had a pretty nice session going. It is the start of the summer so there were more kids there, but I think a lot of kids are still in school. I worked on my double frontside carves today and I am able to get both carves in the tile consistently. I am skating more of the bowl and definitely finding out where all the kinks and weird spots are. I spent some time trying sweepers in the deepend and was able to land two. Steve worked a bit on late grab airs. He can bust them pretty far out of the bowl but can't pull them back. He is getting
very close, though. Chris was grinding like a madman as usual. He tried a couple b/s disasters and came very close on one. He will be landing them soon. It was a pretty rad session today.

06.05.02-06.09.02
Bowl Bash VII. Steve and I headed out Wednesday morning and drove straight to Louisville. We drove through some heavy rains and when we got to Louisville it had just stopped raining. There were a couple of people milling around and they told us it would be dry in about an hour. We went to get gas and came back and checked it out. It was still wet but was drying fast. There was some water sitting in the fullpipe so we found a towell and started pushing it towards the drains. After about 45 min the park was dry enough to skate. It dried up completely soon after and we had the large part of the park practically to ourselves.
I found my line and was getting a lot of speed. I got a lot higher in the fullpipe and was doing some frontside kickturns in the oververt. We were hoping to hook up with Rob and Ed in Louisville but we missed them. It turns out they got a motel and passed out before it stopped raining. I would've really liked to session the park with them and Murf, who happened to be out with them. We skated Louisville for about 4 hours and then hit a hotel a couple miles down the rode in Indiana. The next morning we headed back over to Louisville but it had rained a lot during the night and was pretty wet. We decided to head to Skatopia instead
of waiting around. It took us about 5 hours to get to Skatopia. When we arrived it was pretty hectic. It had rained quite a bit there and all the trails were muddy. We parked down by the barn and checked out the scene. Ben was working on the fullpipe. It was nice to see a familiar face right away. He told us Psycho was up at Camp ECRW by the purple bus. There was work to be done so Steve and I got to work. We shoveled gravel for an hour or so and then headed up the hill to make camp. We didn't have a tent so I slept in the purple bus and Steve slept in the bed of the truck. It was already pretty hectic the first night with some
demolition derby and some skating. I skated the punisher for a bit but took some hard slams and decided to skate later on in the weekend. There was an awful lot of mayhem going down. Fireworks, potato guns, skating, offroading, etc... I awoke early Saturday morning to the sound of 'Incoming!' and fireworks. Camp Keystone was getting an early start on the potato wars and our camp soon returned fire. I didn't get enough sleep and wasn't feeling too great. We headed to the store to get some food and some potatos. After getting back Steve drove the truck up the hill, which was still
pretty muddy. It was quite an experience. We got stuck on our
side with two wheels almost coming off the ground but made it up ok. There were some more of the usual mayhem today. I was really tired and managed to get some sleep amid the chaos. I felt better when I woke up and participated in some dirtboarding. Ben made a trail that went down a mellow hill and then hit a steep drop off with overgrown plants on each side. They went over the trail and made a small tube to shoot through. Many tried but few made it down and rode away. I tried a couple times but ate it each time. It was a lot of fun and still a bit muddy so the falls didn't hurt too much.
A lot more people showed up including the CKY crew, who were bombarded with potatoes and fireworks and left before the night was through. Bands began playing as the sun went down and we went down to the bowl to check out the action. Brewce Martin was destroying the bowl. I have never seen anyone skate anything so fast. I ran into AC from West Virginia down by the fullpipe. I was pretty tired and after hours of insanity
down by the barn I headed back up and fell asleep. Saturday morning I awoke a bit later than the previous day and felt much better. I had some breakfast and went down with Rob to skate. I sessioned the fullpipe for a bit and then went up to the punisher. I was getting pretty high in the fullpipe, probably about 10 o'clock. I was skating the punisher a lot better than the last time. I was getting some nice f/s grinds in the deepend and some sweepers in the lowend. I tried skating the small bowl outside but it had some holes and the plywood corners didn't match up to the metal. It was very hot so I took some more runs in the
fullpipe and headed back up to the camp.
I watched the mayhem for most of the day. There were a total of 8 cars burned over the weekend, and most of them were burned today. There was a lot of demolition derby, rallying, and a truck tug of war. The potato war raged on and Camp Keystone pulled out the slingshot. The slingshot was extremely deadly because you couldn't hear it shot so potatoes could land at anytime. I tried shooting the tube on the dirtbird a couple more times but was unsuccessful. Rob took a pic of me barrelling down the tube so hopefully
I will get that sometime. When the sun started to go down we headed back down
to the barn for some more skating. I ran into Scott Greene from Philly, who I skated with at Skater Island a bit ago. He sessioned the fullpipe and the punisher with me. He pulled a sick f/s kickturn on the fullpipe where he grapped the coping
of the drop in. I was getting a little higher than earlier in the day and it felt great. I took a pretty hard slam and slowly moved off the pipe. After the slam I decided to give the fullpipe a rest and I went up to the Punisher. I was skating a lot better than before and getting some great f/s grinds in the deepend. I got a nice f/s air partly out of the deepend too. I pulled a bunch of sweepers in the lowend and they felt great. I skated until I couldn't skate anymore and had to rest before walking back up the hill to camp. There was a lot of mayhem going on at camp. I watched it until it was dark and then headed back
down to the bowl to see the skating. Brewce was destroying the bowl again.
Science, Grant, The Governor, Shorty, Stranger, The Rueler, and many more were killing it. I left a little earlier and went back to camp to hang out. I was extremely tired and skating so much and went to bed rather early.
On Sunday I got up rather early and ate some breakfast. We cleaned up a bit and headed out. I gave Brewce a nice donation for CIA and I picked up some stickers, a shirt, and a video. As we were ready to pull out a drunken idiot drove the tow truck into the barn but only damaged one wall. We left around 11:30am and made it back around 7pm. It was quite an adventure and I can't wait to go back in the fall. More pics of the skating and mayhem that went down here.

Steve and I headed up to Skater Island, Rhode Island for a 2 day trip. Usually when we go up we stay in Boston and try to hit either Nashua or Newburyport but we decided to just hit Skater Island this trip. We got up there about 7pm on friday and had 2 hours to skate. There were some local guys tearing up the snakerun and the street course. We skated the bowl for almost the entire 2 hours. I found my old line pretty quickly and was very happy. I had to loosen up my trucks to hit the double f/s in the shallowend. Steve was ripping it up with some burly b/s grinds in the deepend.
We met a dude named Tim who was show some blantant localism in the bowl. He was skating lines that I hadn't even thought of - f/s smith over the hip, airs off the hip into the lowend.. This guy
definitely had the bowl wired. He offered us a place to stay but bailed before we left. We saw a burly session go down in the snake run from the bowl. B/s bonelesses, b/s airs over the hip, long grinds across the pool coping, sweepers over the hip, etc, etc.. Another dude was slashing at the oververt wall but didn't quite get his trucks over. Definitely a rad session. We ended up staying at the HoJo down the road. The next day we got up and hit Skater Island at around 11am. We spend a good deal of time in the bowl but hit the snake run and the vert ramp too. I managed to pull a couple
nice f/s airs out of the bowl. I also managed to b/s and f/s grind the deepend and the shallowend pockets. Steve laid down some sick long f/s grinds in the deepend. Steve wanted me to skate the vert ramp and after a little convincing I went over. At first I was dropping in and just doing some cess slides on the walls but I started trying to pump higher and managed to get a nice b/s grind in. Steve had some speed and b/s grinded the 13' extension (with pool coping). I was thinking about dropping in on the extension and after a little hesitation I got up the nerve to do it. After I did it Steve
felt he should too. He pulled it and then started attempting to air the channel. It took him a bunch of tries but he pulled a couple sick ones. He tried some b/s ollies over it too but didn't pull any. It was a rad session. We left around 4pm and made it home around midnight.

Tim and I hit the ditch today. We were hoping to meet up with Charlie but we missed him. There were some kids there when we pulled up. They looked pretty young but one of them drove so he was at least 16. They were street kids and were having some trouble adapting but were doing ok. One pulled a blunt to rock and roll and was trying b/s disaster reverts. We skated with them for about a half hour and then skated for another half hour after they left. It was pretty hot out and our energy was drained pretty quickly. Tim has a gnarly speed line and threw up a badass f/s grind to disaster
on his 2nd wall after crossing the middle.

05.29.02
Steve and I went to Vans for our weekly session. I worked on my double f/s deepend carves for a bit and started doing some thrusters on my third wall coming into the shallowend. I really like that line. I tried to incorporate an air into the line on the second pass but didn't get out of the bowl. Definitely something to work on. Steve wanted me to skate the large street course with him and I finally caved and went over. Steve was trying a b/s ollie over the channel and hit some beautiful ones. I pulled a sweeper on the 7' quarter after a couple tries and threw
some berts down on the bank ramps.
|
05.23.02
Tim and I hit the ditch for a short session today. It was pretty hot out but we got some pretty rad runs in. I definitely haven't been skating here enough lately.
|
05.22.02
Another weekly vans Session. I spent the majority of time in the kidney working on some lines. I was really feeling the f/s double carve and getting into tile on both walls. I also worked on lien to tails. Steve skated the bowl for a bit and also hit the large street course to air the channel. He pulled a b/s ollie over it too. Bitter Chris showed up and we had a pretty nice session going.
|
05.15.02
Steve and I went down to Vans for our weekly session. After pulling an axle stall in the cheeze bowl he was determined to pull one in the deepend of the bowl. He spend the majority of time trying and got very frustrated. I've never seen a man bend the axles of his trucks, at least not until today. I was thinking about trying a sweeper in the deepend but couldn't find the right line. I decided to work on my f/s double carves and was getting into the tile consistantly. I threw up a nice grind but rode away pretty sketchy. Bitter Chris was there and was grinding the hell out of the bowl as usual.
It was extra slick today and we were all slipping around. It was a great session and the double carves felt great. Hopefully I'll be pulling double grinds soon.

The guys down in Nags Head, NC are building an awesome bowl. It has a 9.5' round section and a 10' square section with two identical hips seperating them. It has an oververt pocket and a channel in the square section. The entire bowl has been plyed and is skatable. There is homemade concrete coping on part of the round section. The bowl is going to be closed
down in about a month so they can put skatelite down and pour coping. We left VA around 10:30am and immediately hit a ton of traffic. We sat in NoVA for about an hour. It cleared up around the Vans exit and we were on our way. After a little confusion we made it to our friend Marc's house in Wanchese, NC at about 5pm. Marc took us over to the Cheeze bowl and we were pretty amazed. This bowl is
rad! I had some trouble finding a good place to drop in but found a decent line I could get in to. The best line I found the first day was dropping in and hitting the oververt pocket b/s. I was able to pull some sweepers in the 9.5' section and I started trying them over the hip. After many tries I was able to pull a somewhat sketchy one but it felt great anyway. Steve was pushing me
to do one in the 10' section and after a few tries I was able to pull one. Marc was ripping it up with some b/s and f/s airs, some 50-50 stalls, and some great lines. He also pulled out some texas plants and some weird tricks that not even Marc knew the name of. Steve forgot his helmet but nevertheless was getting the hang of this bowl and was throwing down some rad stuff.
He pulled an awesome rock to fakie and was getting up near the edge of the oververt. He also pulled some nice f/s earlygrabs over the channel. Rob was there and was doing some of the sickest carves I've seen. It was very apparent that almost all the local skaters surfed too. As it started getting dark we got a bite to eat and went
back to Marc's. The next day we got some breakfast and headed back to the cheeze bowl for another session. A lot more people showed up today and there was pretty sick session going down. Dirty showed up and was pulling some sick airs and some grinds on the oververt. Steve was skating the bowl a lot better today pulled a 50-50 stall, a b/s ollie over the channel, and a b/s grind on the oververt. He also
rolled into the round bowl which is insane since there is barely any deck and it is not level. I pulled a couple sweepers in the round bowl and was able to pull another one over the hip but it was even sketchier than the one I pulled the day before. I got a carvegrind in on the round bowl which took me a couple tries since the coping sticks out a bit. It should be much better once they put the skatelite down. Dirty and
Rob
were doing some sick doubles runs and throwing up some f/s thrusters in the oververt. Dirty was getting some slash grinds and airs in the oververt too. I was able to copy their line and got up in the oververt f/s. I also got some nice double carves in the square end.
That line was the best one I found and it felt great. We left the Cheeze bowl
around 6pm and got home around midnight. The bowl was great but will definitely be much better
with coping and skatelite. I can't wait to go back once it's finished. Steve has some pics of the trip here and some of the bowl here.

05.08.02
Steve and I went to Vans this morning. It was pretty hot and they had the large garage doors open around the park. It makes the park much brighter and gets some fresh air in. I decided to try some lien to tails in the bowl today. After many attempts I was finally able to pull a couple, although they aren't really lien to tails but more like lien to tailstalls.
Bitter Chirs was there and Joe showed up about halfway through the session. It was good to see Joe again. We had a pretty rad bowl session for a bit. Near the end of the session Steve started trying to air the channel in 8' quarter pipe on one of the street courses. As soon as I went over to take a few tries he stuck it. After a couple tries I was able to land it but
I landed pretty low on the transition on the opposite side. Steve was able to do them much higher.

05.03.02-05.04.02
46 hours, 1350 miles, and a hell of a lot of skating. Steve and I decided to go west and hit the Falcon, Louisville, and Skatopia. We left at 7am on Friday morning and after a couple stops in DC we headed West. We arrived in Huntington, WV at
around 4pm and met up with our friend Jonny. He took us over to the Falcon, a skatepark built in '79 and destroyed around '83. There is a 30 foot section of the snake run that is still in skatable condition. The rest is buried and some of it destroyed.
There is also a small Freestyle Area that is still skateable.
There is no flatbottom and the walls are about 6' high and come close to vert. Tim, who has skating the Falcon since it opened, was there and was shoveling out some mud and sweeping up when we arrived. It took Steve and I a couple drop ins to get used to
the place. Steve took a brutal fall on one of his early runs. He hit a large crack near the end on a hip and flew over the bottom and smacked in to the opposite wall. Tim was ripping it up with some high f/s early graps,
some sweepers, and some grinds. Jonny
pulled some nice rock and rolls and was trying to pull a b/s 50-50 stall. He was damn close but wasn't able to pull it. After a couple tries I threw down some nice sweepers and a couple early grabs. Steve did some sick
b/s grinds as usual. The Falcon is very fast
and gnarly. If you can find it, Skate it!We got back from the Falcon at around 7pm and got some Pizza. Jonny called his roommate Andy and, after calling off some plans with his girl, he was down for the Louisville sess. We left a little after 8pm and got to Louisville a little
after 11pm. This park is absolutely insane. It is open 24 hours and is fully lit. As we drive up the park we can see the 24' full pipe staring us down. The park was pretty packed but Jonny and Andy said it was least crowded they have ever seen it. I went over to the Full Pipe which seemed
to be the least crowded area. There is a 4' bowl to 8' to 11' to 24' Full pipe to another 11' bowl. I took a couple runs and immediately found a nice line. After a couple runs I found the guys sessioning a 6' area that drops down to an 8' bowl. We took a couple runs and then headed back to the
full pipe. We sessioned the full pipe and bowls with some rad locals. All the bowls were flawless and the waterfalls were perfect. I managed to incorporate some sweepers and some early grabs in the 8' section into my run. I was able to get a lot of speed and was getting
to about 9:30 on the fullpipe. Both Jonny and Andy were working on their lines and were getting just over 9 o'clock by the end of the night. Steve started off skating his punk point which has softer wheels and looser trucks.
He wasn't able to get enough speed and after slamming in the full pipe and having
the punk point (which doesn't have much of a point anymore) fall from 12 o'clock he switched to his Wolfpack deck. He was immediatly skating much faster and getting higher in the pipe. He was hitting 10 o'clock
and had all the locals cheering. He also threw down some b/s grinds in the 11' sections.
At around midnight a band started playing and jammed till about 1:30am. There were still a ton of kids there. It didn't start clearing out until about 4am and there were still about 60 people there. We were all pretty beat and decided to call it quits at 5am. We met some locals who gave us the lowdown
on Skatopia which we were very grateful for. This park is almost unreal. The only thing it is missing is a closed in bowl with some pool coping. A couple tight pockets would be nice too. We got back to Jonny and Andy's apartment at around 8am and passed out.
We got up around 3pm and got some directions to Skatopia. Jonny and Andy had plans so Steve and I went by ourselves. We got there around 5pm. It is in the middle of nowhere and a pack of dogs greated us as we drove up the long driveway. We passed the house and there are signs that say 'Skatopia,'
'No Minors beyond this point' and 'No law enforcement agents beyond this point.' We drove past the signs and pulled up to a large barn with a huge ramp next to it. We went up into the barn and got our first glance of The Punisher. 13' deepend, 6' lowend, and pool coping all around. There was a little water in
bottom so we took some shirts and soaked it up. We've heard many stories of people getting wrecked here so we were a little wary of it. I hopped in and went down the waterfall from the shallowend and carved around. I then tried dropping in, carving the lowend corner and going down the waterfall. After a couple
tries I did it and found a decent line. After I got comfortable I started carving higher and got a b/s carvegrind in the deepend. Steve soon followed suit with some b/s grinds of his own. I started experimenting with a different line - b/s lowend, b/s deepend, f/s lowend pocket,
f/s deepend. This line felt very good and after getting comfortable
I got some nice f/s grinds in on the deepend and damn that pool coping felt good. After getting some more grinds in I tried some early graps below the coping. I took a pretty hard slam on one. I took a final
run and decided I was done. We packed up our stuff and were about to leave when some locals showed up.
We watched them take a few runs and decided to join the session. One of the guys was ripping it up with airs over the hips and all types of lip tricks. Another was doing some of the fastest f/s carves I've seen. They put on some music and I was getting pretty pumped up. I was pulling some f/s grinds and early graps. I
got a nice f/s carvegrind in the shallowend and had so much speed I got some air going down the waterfall. I managed to land ok and was on the fall wall before I knew what happened. I threw down some sweepers in the shallowend and was able to go right into my line. We skated till about 10pm and started our long journey home.
We got a little lost leaving but were able to find our way to the main road. We arrived at Steve's house at around 5am and I crashed there. Overall it was an awesome trip. We didn't get to hang out and party much but we did a hell of a lot of skating, and when you don't have much time, skating and driving is all you can do.

What better way to celebrate May Day and remember our fallen anarchist brothers then to skate? I've had a cold for the past week and have not had much energy. I tried getting up early for a Vans session but I needed the sleep. I slept
for an extra hour and a half and then woke up Tim to go hit the ditch. It was getting a bit hot out and I needed to get to work so we kept the session short. I've been working on ollieing higher on the hip and the lighter board is helping
a lot. They feel great and I'm finding some new lines.

Matt had organized quite a session at the ditch today. He told me that everyone was getting there around noon. At 11:30 he called me and said he couldn't make it due to car troubles. I headed over at noon and found
some guys from the Northeast Tattoo shop. They had closed the shop to come so they couldn't stay long. I skated with them 'til about 12:30. I skated solo for a half hour and was just about to leave when one of the dudes from
Striking Distance pulled up. I skated with him for a half hour and he was pulling some sick lines. Charlie showed up at about 1:30 with a friend. I skated with them 'til about 2 and then headed home. It was a pretty rad session.

It was dry today so Tim and I headed over to the ditch for another session. we skated for about 45 minutes before getting some burritos and heading home. I worked on my ollie on the hip and pulled some nice ones.

Tim and I had planned to skate the ditch today but it was raining when we got up. We got some burritos instead and headed home. After a couple hours the roads started drying up so we headed over to the ditch to see if it was also dry. The corner near the pipes
had a small amount of standing water but the ditch was bone dry everywhere else. We got a good hour long session in before heading home. Tim and I were both trying axle pivots to fakie. I was able to pull them into disaster position and then rock and roll away. Tim
was doing the same except he was fakie rocking out of it.

Steve and I headed down to Vans for the weekly session. We got there earlier than usual today. Steve wanted to skate some vert so he padded up today. We started at the bowl and had a pretty good session going. For some reason the top of the coping was really slippery so whenever I tried sweepers my back foot would slip
out and they would be really sketchy. The bowl itself felt pretty good today. We headed over to the vert ramp and took a couple runs. Steve was getting some sick grinds in. I felt really sketchy
on the ramp. I think I need a vert deck with tighter trucks. After a short session on the vert ramp we returned to the bowl and finished the session there.

Don came down from Philly for the weekend. He was missing the ditch so that is the first place we hit. Tim, Don, and I headed over. It was pretty hot again today. We got about an hour and a half of skating in before the rains came. Don got a new camera so we took a bunch of pics. I only got a
couple so I'll post
the ones I have. Charlie showed up and we had a pretty bitchin session
going on for quite a bit. It starting getting pretty cloudy and the wind picked up which dropped the temperature about 15 degrees. We got about 15-20 minutes of skating in cooler conditions before the rain. We left just in time
to miss the downpour. Driving home in it was an experience though. Later that night we headed over to the last Crispus Attucks show. I brought my board in case there was anything to skate but there wasn't much. During one of the songs a bunch of us started a skateboard circle
pit which was pretty fun. The show was hella fun and extremely hot. I had a blast but will definitely miss seeing them.

The heat wave continues. Tim and I hit the ditch today and skated for about a half hour. The smaller deck is definitely making a positive difference at the ditch. I was popping ollies a lot higher. Tim was working on f/s disasters. He had a couple nice looking ones and almost pulled a couple lipslides.

Steve and I hit Vans for our usual Wednesday session. It was pretty hot in the park but not that bad. It was hotter outside. I skated the bowls the entire time. There were two things I wanted to try and tried them both with minimal success. The first was to try and look at feet during b/s carves so I could grind better. This felt a bit wonky and I wasn't able to grind any better. I think I'll try this out a bit more but stick to my normal carves for the most part. The second thing I wanted to try was crailslides. I figured the best way
was to try grabbing my nose on a 5-0 first. I was able to get this down okay but when I tried to turn it into a crailslide I couldn't get the board in tail slide position on the coping. I think if I keep at it I'll be able to pull it. I also spent a little time in the kiddie pool. I found a pretty good line that I've been working on. I didn't like this bowl at all for a long time but its growing on me a little now. I'm still not very thrilled about it but I do want to skate it a bit more.

Steve and I planned to hit Owl's Head park in NYC today but found out that it was closed at the last minute. We decided to hit New York anyway so we headed up. We stopped by FDR on the way up and took some runs in the pool pocket. I found a nice line that I can't get out of my head. Steve was laying down some b/s grinds and seemed to find a sweet line too. Both of us can't wait to go back.

Tim, Steve, and I headed down to Vans for the 2:30 session. It was pretty crowded, but as usual the bowl was free. John Bulldog and Lil Chris showed up and we had a pretty badass pool session going. The punk point felt rad in the bowl although it was a little less stable. I had to adjust my trucks a couple times. Tim hasn't been to Vans in quite a bit and had a couple sketchy runs in the bowl. After the first couple runs he started getting the hang of it again and was in the tile in no time. Steve and Tim sessioned the 4' for a bit and Steve pulled a sick Staplegun. I sessioned the big bowl with Chris and took some runs in the
kiddie pool. I have never been able to have any fun in that bowl but Chris showed me a nice line and I was able to keep some speed. I pulled a couple nice creepers today. I was trying to do sweepers but kept grapping the toe rail because of the small deck. I pulled some nice ones. I'm digging the 8.5" and I think I'm gonna stick with it for a bit.

04.11.02
It was pretty hot out today. Tim and I headed over to the Riverdale ditch for a quick session. There was a kid there learning how to skate when we arrived. I guess he was too intimidated because he sat down as soon as we got there and didn't skate again until we were leaving. I put my old Spitfires on my punk point, added some risors, and loosened the trucks. I want to skate an 8.5" deck for a bit to see how it feels. Tim and I skated for about a half hour. The punk point felt good. My heel felt okay but was a little sore. Tim was ripping and trying some nosegrinds. I was just trying to get used
to the smaller deck and pull my usual tricks. It was a pretty great session but was a bit too hot.

I picked up some gel heel cups and some insoles today. They really make a lot of difference. Crispus Attucks played a show at WMUC so Tim and I headed over there. We got there a bit early (a couple hours before C.A. went on) so we skated around campus a bit. We sessioned the sundial for a bit. I was mainly doing noseslides and manuals. My heel felt ok but I definitely felt restricted. I didn't want to try anything hard and land on it again. We skated for about an hour and then got some smoothies and went back to the show. This was C.A.'s second to last
show and they ripped.

It was a beautiful spring morning today. I headed down to Vans with Steve. It is still spring break for some schools and the park was packed. I headed over to the bowl since the tikes stay clear of it. I took some runs and was feeling pretty good. I put some more risors on my deck and I loosened my trucks just a tad. I tried some f/s airs in the deepend but they weren't feeling that good today. I think I was coming up to straight towards the coping. About halfway into the session I bailed on a f/s air and rebruised my heel. I sat for a bit and tried to take some more runs but I couldn't put any weight
on it. I decided to call it a day and watch Steve for a bit. He was ripping up the back street course and pulled some sick boardslides and noseslides on one of the higher ledges. I'm definitely gonna have to invest in some insoles. Hopefully my heel will feel better enough to get a session in this weekend.

Steve and I headed down to Zion today. We hung out there a bit and watched some vids and then headed over to Jaime's to help out with the backyard. When we got to Jaime's they had already decided to take the day off so we took some runs in the bowl. This was definitely my best session in the bowl. I haven't found a good place to drop in to the shallowend so I have to drop in on the midend. Steve was getting some grinds in on the mid section and pushing me to. After a couple runs I managed to get some b/s grinds and they felt great. This was the first time I ground this bowl. The coping is the
smoothist pool coping I've ever ground, its like butter. I started doing some f/s carves in the midend and then in the shallow. I got some sweet f/s carves in the corner of the shallowend. Steve was pushing me to carvegrind the corner but I wasn't able to. If I hold the carve too long then it shoots me straight into the (unfinished) deepend, which is quite frightening. There is a new volcano on the deck and Steve was trying to rock-to-fakie it. After getting close a couple times he pulled it perfectly and then pulled it a couple more times for good measure. After that great session we decided to
hit the Franconnia Ditch. It was a little wet in the area I like to skate, but there was a large dry section. We skated for a bit. The new wheels definitely do not slide as good on rough concrete like this. I still got some slides in though. I started tying to do some speed carves but got wheelbite and scraped up my hands. Not learning from my lesson I continued with the carves until I took a second slam and decided to call it quits. I put another risor on when I got home (I'm now at 1/2")

Steve and I hit Vans this morning before work. I brought along the new Danforth and planned to stay in the bowl for the session. There seemed to be the least chance of reinjuring my heel in the bowl. The new deck felt wonderful in the bowl and the new 95a wheels really gripped the walls. Its spring break (college!!) so there were tons of kids there. I forgot how crowded Vans can get. It was a good thing I planned to stay in the bowl because that was the only haven from the crowds. I skated very well today. I had some nice f/s airs and sweepers and experimented
with some new lines. I tryed some f/s double carves in the deepend. The first couple were sketchy but I soon found a line and they felt great. Steve was spending a lot of time in the bowl too due to all the kids. He pulled some f/s doublecarves too. They are a little harder for him since he is goofy, but he got some nice ones in. It was definitely a great session and I can't wait to go back and experiment with the new lines.

Its been 10 days since my last session and my heel is starting to feel better. I used the extra time to set up the new Bad Apple Bill Danforth pool model (9"x33"). I also picked up some of the new Nicotine Danforth Blackcore wheels. They are 62mm and have super hard (75d) innards and 95a tread. I also rotated the trucks when I set up the new deck. I took the setup to the ditch and gave it its virgin session. I thought the deck was little big, but when I rode it it felt great. We had a pretty ripping session going -
Matt, Bo (in from Atlanta), Sonny, and Charlie. Matt was doing sick b/s method grinds and even pulled some edgers. Very sick. Bo was getting used to the ditch but still pulled some sweet ollies. Charlie is really getting the hang of it. He is using the whole ditch and carving through the channels f/s, which is a lot harder than b/s. Sonny brought his old school deck (an old Sims Rocco that has been spraypainted) and tryed hitting some banks but doesn't have the coordination down yet. Bo and Sonny took a bunch of pictures, so if I ever get a hold of them I'll put some up. I was skating
a lot better than I thought I would be coming off the injury. I was pulling all my normal tricks and even pulled the sweet sweeper on the extension. I think it was the best one I've done at the ditch. Near the end of the session some street kids showed up and brought a foot high box which they placed at the top of the bank. They pulled some decent stuff but were not able to hit more than 2 or 3 walls. They kept dropping in on one side while people were skating the far side. They dropped in on me a couple times as I was coming over to their side. Luckily they bailed on their first trick
so we didn't collide. Matt was trying some stuff on the box and got a nice boneless 180 to b/s fakie grind in but took a hard slam coming off. I ended the session falling right onto my hurt heel off a bail on the sketchy wallride extension (plywood leaning against the manhole). It is sore again but not nearly as bad as last week. I'm gonna get some insoles and try to stay off it (i.e. not push myself too hard) until it heals.

It was a really disgusting morning. The sky reminded me of Portland, OR. Steve and I headed down to Vans for an early session. I took some warm up runs in the bowl and headed over to the 6'. Steve and I had been discussing trying some lien to tails today. We tried them for a bit, and after many tries I started landing some into tailstalls. Steve was having some trouble staying in the halfpipe - he kept going onto the deck. I worked on lien to tailstalls for most of the morning. Steve starting |
